Its hard to think of anything negative about these two excellent films (not going to repeat the story again-there are plenty of reviews here). However its worth noting that the slowness in the pace of these films mirrors the lives and setting of the characters portraid within. If you have the time (4 hours) and patience you see the story unfolding rather than punching you in the face! The ending is one of the best, in that it is unexpected and jaw dropping. Ignore the negativity from other reviews, pseudo experts who hint but fail to suggest of better, buy them and see for yourself, it will be money well spent

Pretty good as a film - but a bit po-faced. Watching it, you'd never guess that the original book is actually very funny.

DVD : Lucie Aubrac [1998]
After watching Claude Berri's "Jean de Florette," and "Manon of the Spring," I became a true fan. "Lucie Aubrac" just confirms my belief in Monsieur Berri's talents as a major director and a discerning producer in cinema today.

Set in Lyon, during the French Resistance in World War II, "Lucie Aubrac," played brilliantly by Carole Bouquet, is a woman struggling to save her husband from the hands of the Gestapo. The film is based on a true story, and Madame Aubrac's memoir, "Outwitting The Gestapo."

Raymond Aubrac (Daniel Auteuil), is a Resistance fighter in occupied Lyon, and has participated in many acts of sabotage against the Nazis. When he is captured by the Gestapo, headed by the notorious Klaus Barbie ("The Butcher Of Lyon"), he ... Read More:

5.Germinal starring: Renaud, Gérard Depardieu, Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet, Judith Henry

DVD : Germinal
Based on Emile Zola's 1885 novel, Germinal describes the suffering experienced by miners in Northern France during the late 19th century. Faced with low pay and dangerous working conditions, they choose to revolt, or face certain starvation. The director, Claude Berri, chose to use several famous european actors including Gerard Depardieu, which does add appeal to this grim but moving film. Depardieu is particularly impressive in this film as he brings a certain humanity to his role of Maheu, a not-too-bright father of seven, who is finally persuaded to strike by a charismatic Marxist known as Etienne. Berris successfully recreates the atmosphere and setting described by Zola in his book. He conveys the claustrophobic darkness that so many miners experienced ... Read More:
