Mad as a strange cheese, this movie is scriptwriter Woody Allen's first screenplay, so that goes a long way to explain the complete unevenness and disorganistion of this movie. It took him 15 years of practice after this to actually produce anything resembling a cohesive, non-fragmentary narrative and a further five to stop telling the same jokes, so really, if you want to watch this film because you're a Sellers, O'Toole or Romy Schneider fan (she is delectable in this) then you will simply have to bare all the worst excesses of this man's craft. Of course he also makes it hilarious most of the time, and this does compensate for the very bumpy ride. He has a strong part himself and he made sure he would have some sort of film career with a full ... Read More:

A good version of the Pinter thought piece. Directing this piece either for stage or film requires a touch that enables the viewer to catch up with its possible under themes, and to reflect on the carefully written dialogue. This is done well here, the camera lingering on certain scenes when all the 'action' (mainly talk) has finished. Nicely cast using men who know what Pinter's all about: this is different to playing Becket, it is one step closer to real life while still not quite in the same room.

Rooms are central to Pinter productions, and this one didn't really have to be more adorned than it was, even if you sometimes catch yourself thinking, 'God why don't they spruce it up a bit?-No wonder they're miserable!' The production didn't ... Read More:

I first saw this wonderful film back in the seventies when it was first shown on BBC television and had been looking for it ever since.Firstly I came across a vhs release where the picture quality was attrocious they had used a very worn out print of the film full of scratches and jumps and the colour was all runny and blurred, then I bought a region one American release and the same print had been processed through a digital clean up process and was still scratchy, but the colours were much better, but I was delighted to have it to watch and have watched this beautiful atmospheric adventure movie several times over and still love it to pieces. Its amongst my ten alltime favourite movies so I am hoping this release may be a fully restored release this time of ... This appears to be the only version of this rarely seen film available on dvd in Europe or the USA.This is unfortuneate as it has two oddities.Firstly it breaks down at different points between the 13 and 15 minute marks. I have tried 3 different discs and various different players and computer dvd drives all with the same result. Nobody can explain why this happens. Secondly it comes with large and intrusive dutch subtitles which cannot be removed.best avoided until the manufacturers sort out the problem.

DVD : The Scarlet Pimpernel [1982]
Clive Donner's 1982 Scarlet Pimpernel is an exciting blend of two Baroness Orczy novels, 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' and 'Eldorado' (written around the supposed rescue of the young Dauphin, when it was still historically unclear whether or not the son of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette might have survived the Revolution). Instead of trying to cram every last detail of the main story into the film (as with the 1934 Leslie Howard production), or completely losing all sense of the original template (the 1998 series), this film manages to stay true to the spirit of the books, and pay homage to its black and white predecessor, whilst creatively translating page to screen. This is the only Scarlet Pimpernel version to include Percy's romancing of Marguerite, instead ... Read More:

DVD : Agatha Christie Collection Featuring Peter Ustinov (REGION 1) (NTSC)
As the David Suchet Poirot shows have got so dreary Sir Peter Ustinov's Americanised TV movies that have no real feeling for the period in which Agatha Christie wrote her novels are a welcome change ! Murder In Three Acts is brilliant with Tony Curtice giving an engaging performance and Faye Dunaway is glamorous & crafty in Thriteen At Dinner . Dead Mans Folly is a well put together while Jean Stapleton's eccentric potrayal of Mrs Oliver is a delight . Johnathan Cecil is a pleasantly dim Hastings and it is clear that he and Sir Peter Ustinov worked together very well . These TV movies convey the basic essence of Agatha Chritie's novels ( Three Act Tradegy , Lord Edgware Dies & Dead Mann's Folly ) in a modern setting for a new generation . As a light hearted ...
