A sublime production, masterful orchestration and soloists that are a compliment to each other and bring the tenderness and power of the work to new hights. Even the resonance of the setting adds further enjoyment to the whole experience. A must !

Absolutely superb.

As much as I love the Britten/Pears recording, to my mind this supercedes it in ever way. Colin Davis, not necessarily one of my favourite conductors, is spectacularly good here. He brings out so many details I haven't heard before and captures the tremendous range of this score, it's moods, rhythms, scene-painting. You can smell the salt in the air. Vickers is immense as Grimes. Not only does he bring out the man's uncouth qualities, but he also gives us an insight into his love of beauty, his tortured frustration. His singing is achingly tender in "What harbour shelters peace" and "In dreams I've built myself some kindlier home", eerie in "Now the Great Bear and Pleiades", hair-raising in the final monologue. ...
