DVD : L.A. Confidential [1997]
Curtis Hanson has managed to direct a film which captures the late 1940's in both style and spirit. Often films depicting the glamourous side of this era immerse themselves too much in the styles and fashions of the time, rendering the actual characters superfluous to the movie. Not here though - the characters drive the film, blending in perfectly with the directing style swaying effortlessly to capture the gritty and the classic-Hollywoodesque, the guy has done his homework.

Risks were taken by casting relatively unknown non-Americans in the two major roles, a rare thing by a Hollywood studio. It's hard to imagine anyone else but Russell Crowe as the fiery `Bud' and at times Guy Pierce seems a bit awkward as `Exley' - but this ... Read More:

A great film. Not a cryer normally I was wet-eyed at the end of this one. The film concerns the relationship between two sisters; the wayward pretty one and the older sister/clever lawyer, that breaks down allowing each of them to develop that part of their character normally fulfilled by the other one. The lawyer finds a man and the wayward one takes on responsibility. In doing so they also find the missing bits of their family and themselves. As soon as it finished I wanted to watch it again. Highly recommended. Especially good for anyone who ever envied their siblings - you will get this film like no-one else.

"8 Mile" is Eminem's very own Purple Rain.

Such comparisons may very well be lazy. But more than that, they're true.

Take an urban kid living in trailer park squalor. Give him dreams of music and an ability beyond his intelligence. And a spirit-crushing job. All you need to do is give him a child-beating father and you've got Purple Rain.

But it's much better than that. Gone are the fancy flourishes of 80's rock flicks. Gone are the wild concert sequences and the embarrassing hair styles. What you've got is a film that reflects the bored, hopeless existence of trailer park America in a way as compelling as anything since the nihilistic Kids.

"8 Miles" isn't anything even vaguely glam, despite ... Read More:

A beautiful film about the Colorado River. The hero is the river and the nature it crosses, the gorges and the rapids and the falls. And you will go down the river in a light boat. Beautiful indeed. Then the film sets a plot on that river of a nice vacationing family held hostage by the surviving thieves of a cattle auction robbery who try to escape the police after the robbery by using the river and the expertise of the mother of this family. This adds some family tension with a father who is working too hard as an architect and neglecting, in a way, his family, and yet he will save his wife and his son from the grip of the thieves after having escaped them before. Courage, for sure, tenacity definitely. And the beauty of this river all over and ... Read More:

this is one of the best horror films i have seen for ages. Rebecca De Mornay's character is manipulative and evil as she takes over the happy, seemingly perfect family as the nanny. The acting is brilliant, the plot has me jumping at many places and there are only 3 bloody moments in the whole film!suspense is the way forward!

This movie is better than the award winning American Beauty. Wonder Boys is one of those rare modern American movies that really stand out in the pile of relative trash that comes out of there. Along with 'Lost In Translation', this film helped to restore my faith in modern Hollywood. The Michael Douglas character is a gem; his performance shows Douglas aging gracefully and willingly, an accomplishment that only a couple of famous leading men have achieved in recent years.

Wonder Boys is a screwball comedy about a college professor/author who's pushed into maturity (and experiencing a mid-life crisis) by forces beyond his control. Grady Tripp (Douglas) has to face reality as his third wife leaves him and his mistress(Frances McDormand), ... Read More:

A film about a professional gambler trying to win the World Series of poker.
In answer to Mr. R. P. Quinlan's review the film is ABOUT POKER!!! and about a professional POKER PLAYER trying to win! not about Drew Barrymore, all she is there to do is be a reactant that makes Huck Cheever see the consequences of his life and the need to make changes! And she plays that role very well. If you want a drew barrymore film, go get one of the many chick flicks she has done!

The titles list the cast in order of appearance, and the first person listed is "naked woman", played by Palmer Lee Todd. This film starts as it means to go on, namely, it is somewhat sleazy. James Spader gets his kit off too, but not in a full frontal sort of way (no surprise there).

The film isn't particularly special, which normally equates to three stars, but I am giving it an extra star because of the bunny mask. I found it hilarious.

PS I have watched this twice, but still cannot work out which of the party goers is David Duchovny!
