Wow - I sat down with my teenage son to watch a movie, and I must say I've just finished watching it and if I was ever tempted at my age to take drugs again, this film would certainly put me off - it was mean and gritty and scarey and honest and all those things together with powerful images and I wish every teen out there would get it and watch it before they take their first line of coke.
I loved the links between the mum and the son, drugs whatever shape or form can cause dreadful harm. a fab film just not one to watch before bedtime. xx

Spanning over 3 time periods, the Fountain follows the life of Tom (Hugh Jackman) a Spanish Conquistador, a Doctor trying to cure Cancer, and a lone spaceman guarding the Tree of Life.
As the Inquisator is bringing Spain to its knees, Tomas is sent by the queen to find the Tree of Life, hidden somewhere in South America, with only a few good soldiers and a wise priest, he must brave the Mayan Civilisation to reach his goal.
Whilst trying to cure cancer, Tommy's wife Izzy is slowly dying of a Brain Tumor. In her last few days, she gives Tommy a book she has been writing, and the book is called 'The Fountain'.
And in the future, Tom has the sole purpose of guarding the dying Tree of Life. He needs to rekindle its life by sending ... Read More:

The movie is excellent - 5 stars out of 5. The review here is of the Blueray conversion. To me the high definition version - in this case - looks little better than normal DVD. In fact my upscaling DVD performs nearly as well - and before you ask my blueray DVD player and TV are set-up correctly. I guess the problem could be mainly due to this movie having a lot of very dark settings/scenes which don't really lend themselves to a lot of on-screen picture detail. My advice is to save yourself a few pounds and buy the normal DVD instead - at least in this case. The movie itself though - what a visually brilliant and engaging storyline!

DVD : Pi [1999]
I recently bought the Pi DVD set - which also includes Requiem - from a seller on Amazon for just £6, which included postage from the USA! The new DVD arrived within 5 days, which is better service than a lot of UK Amazon sellers provide.

I rate Pi highly for a number of reasons. It is shot in gritty black and white which perfectly captures the lead actors state of mind, and his harsh New York environment. This movie constantly swings between deep mathematical insights into the nature of reality on the one hand, and overwork and madness on the other. It's a rollercoaster of a ride at times as our maths hero plunges further into his black mental maze, but then his brain fog clears again and he breaks through to a new level of mathematical ... Dean and Shiffrin's documentary is a must for anyone interested in the mind behind the story of the main feature, and anyone interested in Selby's written works. The documentary has a thematic organization yet flows smoothly, while covering many aspects of Selby's life, the social context of his works, the obscenity trials, adaptations into films (including several interviews with people who worked on Requiem for a Dream) Interviews with Selby himself and especially footage of Selby reading his works on stage really add to the understanding of his works. The documentary will make you want to go out and read the books if you have not already. The low budget style just enhances the reality of the interviews, for a writer who was pretty much always on a low-budget ... Read More:
