Point's accent is somewhat off-putting, although it could well be closer to English as then spoken than a modern accent would be, but his acting is outstanding. There are some very good touches, such as the funeral procession during the credits at the end, but also some not so happy. Fairfax is disappointing. There is only one disk, which may explain the omission of several numbers, including Strange Adventure and (unforgivably) When a wooer goes a-wooing.

DVD : Iolanthe [1982]
I watched this when it was screened on the BBC in the early 1980s. It was my first experience of Gilbert and Sullivan after the Mikado and it quickly overtook it as my favourite. I watched it because the lady who lived in the flat upstairs from my brother was a member of D'oyly Carte and so I knew all about their troubles. I probably felt that I was watching it out of support for them as I was a bit of a rock chick back then.

Some of the choreography is a little clumsy (and I'm not talking about the fairy in the opening song - she's deliberate), the blue-screening is obvious, but this was 1982. I've always remembered that gorgeous teddy bear in Lord's robes, and having just seen it again, I still want it.

Marvelous performances all around. Thhe soulful ladies scorn their "vulgar" soldiers to pursue the "ethereal" poet.

DVD : Falstaff - Giuseppe Verdi [1976]
This production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle at Glyndebourne in 1976 stars a bass-baritone much-beloved in the US, Donald Gramm, who tragically died at the height of his career only a few years later. I remember with great pleasure his Dr. Bartolo at the New York City Opera (with Beverly Sills) and numbers of recordings of American art songs, most important of which is 'But Yesterday Is Not Today' (still available at AmazonUS), a real treasure for anyone interested in that genre. In the present disc he gives us a lovable and not entirely oblivious Falstaff who is a larger-than-life mortal all too aware of his own frailties. There is not the vaudeville mugging and capering that one sometimes sees in the role. As for the voice, which was not huge but was ... Read More:

This opera was the first I ever saw and therefore it has a very special place in my heart. Having seen Glyndbourne's production of Le Nozze di Figaro, which is excellent, I hade quite some expectations on this DVD. Unfortunately it is, in a word, MISERABLE. The singing is ok (hence the 2 stars), but the rest... Visually it is a complete failure. The sets and costumes are silly and in most cases even ugly, and somehow the make-up artist has managed to make Felicity Lott (Pamina) look old, grey and generally boring. She is supposed to sparkle, she is a beautiful young princess, for heaven's sake! The sound isn't very good, either.
There is a DVD from the Met with almost exact the same visual design, but they somehow carry it off a bit better.

DVD : Gioachino Rossini: Il Barbiere Di Seviglia [1987] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The casting for my first choice, is this, in my opinion, first-class Glyndebourne production - which is almost perfect. The one slightly disappointing contribution was that of Max Rene Cossotti, whose voice was rather 'stretched' at times. However, this was more than compensated for by the contributions of our own marvellous John Rawsley (an amusingly acted, extremely well sung Figaro)and Maria Ewing (Rosina - in extremely good voice) together with the very impressive Claudio Desderi (Dr Bartolo). Over the years, I have seen four or more versions of 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia' with various casts, including my 'runner up' choice starring Luigi Alva/Berganza/Prey/Abbado among others. However, when many years ago,I saw the Glyndebourne production for the ... Read More:

Of all the Macbeth's I've seen I think Kostos Paskalis's is the most convincing performance (although Thomas Hampson's a close second). Paskalis sings well throughout but it is his delivery of Macbeth's final aria which steals it for me; we see a man who regretting what he has done, without self pity realises that he has lost everything and has never been in control of his own destiny. Added to this you get Josephine Bairstow who is a stunning Lady Macbeth, James Morris as Banquo and the rest of the Glyndebourne cast putting in a spirited performance. It is a great combination.
