I too watched this when first screened in 1984. I have a rickety copy of it on an a home taped video, which I've watched many times. I also wrote to the BBC to see if they would release it on video and screen it again on BBC1 (it was only ever screened on BBC2) after it won the BAFTA, but no joy! 'Taking over the Assylum' is funny, moving, warm, thought provoking, full of great music and wonderful characters. The cast are all great, but if you like David Tennant you'll love this. I shall be buying multiple copies for Christmas.

It's slow - the plot is thin - the script uninspiring. A woman wakes up in extraordinarily good nick - no sign of muscle waste, no bedsores - leaps from her tubes & life support after an 18-year coma into a contemporary wardrobe, & runs through the streets looking for nothing in particular. Her friends & family faff around like headless chickens. A birthday party appears to organise itself. Yawn!

DVD : Anna Karenina [2000]
There are people who always try to find fault with everything and everyone...This tv series really fascinated me although I've already seen and bought all the other versions of Anna
Karenina. Indeed I enjoyed G.Garbo and Vivien Leigh's actings
however it's undeniably true and amazing Helen McCrory's performance. The story itself is much more passionate and real than the Hollywod versions we're used to . Nevertheless, in my opinion, comparisons are useless , works of art are to be admired and appreciated as much as possible.

DVD : Mystery: Malice Aforethought [2005] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Malice Aforethought is interesting, with the usual great production values. It features a first-class performance by Ben Miller as Dr. Edmund Bickleigh. On balance, though, I think it suffers by having no sympathetic characters and a plot, which seemed so original when the novel was published in 1931, that now seems a little ho hum. There is no mystery in this mystery, so it depends on how much we can empathize, or at least smile at, the lethal doings of the doctor.

Bickleigh is a country doctor who has risen above his station in life, married well, and whose wife never lets him forget who has the money and the status in their little English town. He is a man with an inferiority complex and a passion for affairs. When he thinks he ... Read More:
