I've really enjoyed the work of director David Cronenberg over the years, so I watched Eastern Promises with anticipation. Naomi Watts plays a London midwife who takes an interest in the case of a young East European girl who dies in childbirth. From the girl's diary she makes contact with a seemingly respectable Russian businessman, Armin Mueller-Stahl, but later learns he's involved in Russian Organized Crime, the girl has been trafficked and forced into prostitution, and the businessman's son is the baby's father. The male lead is Viggo Mortensen, who plays a "driver", but actually muscle within the organization. His character has a tough exterior but within lies a spark of humanity, so he helps Naomi Watts' character to discover the truth ... Read More:

I'm not a huge fan of Cronenberg and didnt enter into this film with particularly high expectations - maybe thats why I enjoyed this film as much as I did.

The story gripped me from the start and I found myself changing my mind throughout the film as to the motives of Mortensen and Harris. The acting is suberb - especially in the scenes between Mortensen and Harris, there is a real palpable sense of tension whenever they are on screen together.

I was gripped by the story and the script, It's not a film for everyone - I can see why some people may find it slow - but if you watch it, concentrate, get drawn into the story and are patient with it, it will reward you.

The style of the film is quite low key - which I ... Read More:

The Brood was David Cronenberg's third feature release and the film that got him noticed outside Canada and the horror genre. With heavy weight actors Oliver Reed and Samantha Egger, Cronenberg's excellent script - Oliver Reed said it was the best written part he had had since The Devils - and a story more psychological than outright horror, though there are a few gory scenes, Mr Cronenberg was onto a winner. This is a film that stays with you long after the final credits have rolled. There are many influences playing through the film, the brood children are reminiscent of the 'dwarf' from Don't Look Now, Howard Shore's excellent strings only score a nod to Bernard Herrman's score for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
The picture quality is okay for a ... Read More:

Not to be confused with this years Oscar winning sensation, you can't help but conclude that Crash 2005 must be referencing its older namesake with the opening dialogue... "We're always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much that we crash into each other just so we can feel something." Crash 2005 is a blockbuster on the controversial subject of racial tensions in Los Angeles.
Crash 1996 was just plain... controversial.

A decade ago the British press ran a series of front page appeals for governmental pressure to ban a new film which they'd described as "Beyond the bounds of depravity."
The 1973 J.G Ballard novel, on which the film is based, had long been a favourite of mine but as the controversy ... Read More:

This film is a popular film and is well cited as an influence to both musical artists and film makers alike but i found this to be far too much waffle for my liking and it seemed to last an age and this wasnt what i hoped for when i finally watched this for the first time.
James woods is a television channel producer who is always on the lookout for the next big thing that can shock his viewers, when he views what appears to be a snuff movie he wants to meet those responsible and here his world changes, debbie harry plays his love interest and she does very well here but this film doesnt move me in any way,the twist at the end is poor and i couldnt take to anyone in the film at all,the special effects are good for the year but apart from that i thought ... i have been looking forward to reading the book but i thought i would save some time and watch the film too. However it was an awfully confusing concept to deal with and i really didn't understand half of the thing. Shame because i'd looked forward to the story for so long and it sort of diappointed me.

The fly is a horror classic from the 80s that deserves its reputation as a well told, well acted gore shocker.

No amount of description here can do justice to this film that contains just about every level of horror and suprise. On a deeper level Cronenberg the Director gets his Lovecraft flag flying, as our imaginations run riot as to how far the fusion of human and fly will go.

Blu Ray
Although I had read good reviews of the picture quality I found that the ordinary bits of the film look just that - ordinary. However it is the incredible make up and gory effects that pay dividends in blu ray. You can see just how much that department has put in to lift the film to its classic status.
The picture is devoid of noise, has good colour ... Read More:

Viggo Mortensen is a great actor which he clearly shows in this film. The story is clear and you get a good look into the director and writers interpretation of the Russian mafia set in London. The atmosphere is excellent and I sat amazed through most of the movie. Most meaning that it was rather long. I am no big fan of Naomi Watts and I thought she did her job on this film, no more no less. But thats probably just me.
If your are interested in Russian society set in western Europe this is a movie for you. If you want fast entertainment, do not go for this film.
Recommended ? yes, definitely.

This is a superb film. Directed by Canadian director David Cronenburg in 1981, it is the story of Cameron Vale, a "scanner" - a man with telepathic powers - and his efforts to uncover the truth of his background, while being hunted himself. Typically for Cronenburg, the film features a great deal of sinister characters, malevolent inscrutable corporations and no little double-crossing, as well as a hearty dose of body horror. If you have never seen this film before, it features one of the most famous special effects in cinema history - if you have seen it before, rest assured that for a film approaching thirty years old, it has aged well and remains a viscerally shocking moment. Probably only the climax isn't as effective, in special effects terms, but emotionally it still packs ... Read More:

This little 2-disc set differs from the previous Fly 1&2 set in that it features the disc 1's from the updated 2-disc Special Editions. So if you can't be bothered with hours of extras, then this is a great value set to get.

Disc 1 features The Fly (1986), digitally remastered version with DTS & DD 5.1 Sound, audio commentary by director David Cronenberg.

Disc 2 features The Fly II (1989), digitally remastered version with DTS & DD 5.1 Sound, audio commentary by director Chris Walas & Film Historian/Archivist Bob Burns, Alternative Ending, Deleted Scene, & Four Theatrical Trailers (original 'Fly' movies & remakes).

Definitely recommend this little set, you get the classic Cronenberg 1986 version of 'The Fly' and its very ... Read More:
