We are going on a journey. Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) is at the wheel whilst Foyle (Michael Kitchen) sits and ponders on aspects of the case. Until he finds the answers we are all kept in suspense. Now, there are those who interrupt you as you sit glued to the box watching a favourite detective series, with those words you dread the most "I think it was him" "It was him, it's got to be him" Your concentration is lost and you've said "Be quiet" more times than you remember. Well, relax this is unlikely to happen with Foyle's War. The script and plots are so good they keep you guessing right to the end. Like an enormous jigsaw puzzle the pieces have been emptied on the table and only Foyle knows how they all fit together and during the process we ... Read More:

What a great series Silent Witness is and it is still going strong. In fact I watched an episode of the new series last night. This 2 disk dvd contains the first series.
The first story Buried Lies is a strong start and introduces us to Dr Sam Ryan played by Amanda Burton. The plot concerns the death of a young girl who is thought to have fallen from a swing and drowned, Sam has other ideas.
Next up is Long Days, Short Night. This was the first episode I ever watched and features Colin Salmon (Tomorrow Never Dies)as a man suspected of a ritual killing.
Ken Stott stars in the next episode Darkness Visible. Sam investigates a custody death in a police cell. Could there be a cover up ?
The final story Sins Of The Fathers is about ... Read More:

I am a big fan of waking the dead, but had never actually watched the first series. After being given some amazon vouchers, I recently brought this series and was not disappointed at all!

It was good to see the team frst coming together and forming their often strained relationships. Added to that were the gripping storylines and solid acting. One of the most haunting episodes is Small Sacrifice. Not only is it spooky, but quite moving too.

I am eagerly awaiting series seven, but this should certainly keep you going in the meantime!

I only caught up with Waking the Dead by seeing a couple of repeats, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I hadn't seen any of series 2.

Yes, I enjoyed it, but with reservations. It's slick and the characterisation is good. As for the plots, well that's another thing. Part of the fun of the genre is that you have to think, but I'm now getting used to the fact that the reason why I'm lost is not because the writing is clever, but because there are too many things about the storylines that simply do not add up. I watched 'Thin Air' last night and I'm still reeling from the absurdity of it all.

I hope that they spent as much money on a team of writers for series 3 as they did on star actors in series 2.

Top marks to Frankie though, as always. ... Read More:

I've bought seasons 1-3. The first season I liked it but the boss guy annoyed the hell out of me. I'm afraid he hasn't improved in seasons 2 and 3. He just seems to be a complete arse and I have no sympathy or connection with the character. The science is great and the storylines are pretty cool too ... but I keep wanting to smack the boss bloke in the chops.

Its been quite a number of years ago now but I do remember seeing the TV Adaptation of The Sculptress on BBC1.

I think the acting by Pauline Quirke, who played Olive Martin, was quite chilling and showed that she could move away from the role of Sharon she played in Birds of a Feather and other comedic roles she was used to. You were also convinced of Olive's innocence within the film.

But I do look forward to reading the novel version of The Sculptress to make comparisons between the TV Adaptation and the novel quite soon.

DVD : The Mayor Of Casterbridge [2003]
A remarkable film, noteworthy for the skill with which it captures the grim, elemental force of the Hardy novel. Ciaràn Hinds, physically large, brooding and saturnine, is quite magnificent as the doom-laden Henchard, and succeeds brilliantly in making us see the "man of character" at the centre of the story as an object of pity every bit as much as a selfish man worthy of contempt. Jodhi May gives a sensitive and intelligent performance as Elizabeth Jane, and the rest of the acting is uniformly of a very high standard. This is a stark and disturbing tale, and the sense of unfolding tragedy is well conveyed by the cinematography, with its emphasis on dark interiors and on slightly menacing outdoor scenes illuminated by flat and subdued lighting. Just over three hours of barely unrelieved ... Read More:
