Even though this movie starts off with the usual: something goes wrong, spacecraft crashes, people are stranded etc. it still pulls off and introduces the viewer to some new ideas. Riddick is somewhat of a badass convict and has modified his eyes so he is able to see in the dark which is a sought after ability in the situation the shipcrew and he is in. The cutting in the movie is very good and emphasizes the mystique that shrouds around the anti-hero and male protagonist: "Riddick." The story in Pitch Black is, as already mentioned, to some extent very unoriginal and dissatisfied, but the clipping and cutting in the movie blended with some surprising elements which has been added to the story helps it to still support itself very well and one ... Appalling acting - even by Judi Dench - how did she ever let herself be involved. The is no real story - and what there is is inconsistent between beginning and the end. Poor special effects. Dire action sequences. The fights are laughable. But worst of all the continuity is shot.

Like many of the reviewers passing comment here, I too feel as if the bad reviews in the press did a disservice to a damn good sci-fi yarn! Pitch Black, while an impressive low(er) budget sci-fi film, owed much to previous films of the genre, but did so with a refreshingly confident twist, creating believable scenarios and good FX. Riddick on the other hand is a whole different beast, and instead of Pitch Black part two, which would have been a safer bet at the box-office, we get a whole new universe and history to fill in the many blacks left teasingly vacant by Pitch Black. this movie is just awesome ..the plot and acting are second to none, and vin diesels sense of humour works very well.the storyline is total new not some revamped film 3 times round !! you just have to go out and buy it (together with Chronicles Of Riddick which carries on from this film) well worth the money !!

The whole film seemed poorly put together and did not really give the viewer anything new. Most of the effects had been seen before, and the "face" that appears seemed to have little relevance. For me the film started off well, but the reliance on the ghost story ruined it. I was hoping it would revolve more around the crew as opposed to a paranormal force. Possibly it tred to do too much which is so often the case in modern Hollywood cinema. The film started well and more could have been made of the survivors they plucked from the sea. I would have liked to have seen more human suspicion to add tension. Certainly comparing this to "Ice Cold in Alex" it has nothing of the suspense and realism.

i think this film is good riddick is a charecter who has so much potential and if you like that and the universe that is in its infacy of creation then you will not be dissapointed by this film watch pitch black first so you know who riddick is, if u like action sci fi i dont see how you will not like. alot has been sed about vin diesels acting this is his charecter he isnt vin diesel he's riddick he isnt a talkative fella who has deep relationships he's a convict who wants to be left alone and he does a good job of conveying that with riddicks attitude which is a guy who is a survivor of his race who were slaughterd. a very good film its a shame it got bad reviews i just hope they carry on the story despite it not been a box office hit. the extras are good on this but this is the first hd dvd ... A simple idea, well executed: Put humans on same planet as aggressive creatures sensitive to light. Put planet into long eclipse. Watch as humans attempt to get off darkened planet as creatures try to kill them. Sounds like yet another standard sci-fi horror flick, doesn't it? Wrong. This is a very good movie that features several characters who have several shades of grey. Worth buying the SD version, and existing fans of the movie will be pleased with the improved picture quality of the HD-DVD version, its hard to believe that this film was originally made in 1999 for a mere $20 million!
