If it were not for the poor sound quality, this would be five stars; but in the modern age, there is an expectation that a DVD should produce quality sound and this does not. This opera is one of the greatest artistic achievements in the world ever; the music is simply stunning; its ecstatic music that makes one rejoice in simply being.

DVD : Verdi: Aida -- La Scala [1986]
What is opera? An opera is a staged dramatic work that is set to music where the words are entirely or primarily sung. This definition may imply that the visual element is predominant to the uninitiated. Whilst this is important, an opera is so much more. Opera lives and dies by the music that accompanies the drama on stage. Where the words alone are sad, the music throws it into a whole other dimension making it heart wrenchingly poignant. If the words stir thought then the music aims straight for the soul and instinctive comprehension.

And so to this Aida that La Scala (thankfully) preserved for posterity. Surely it is one to hold up as a standard for it is beautifully sung by the principles and sympathetically backed up by the maestro and his ... Read More:

La Traviata. This is truly a beautiful production of Verdi's ever popular Traviata. It is light airy and lively at the start and gradually takes on the tempo of the unfolding tragedy. The settings are superb and catch the changing mood of the opera right through to the heartrending climax. I am very conscious that we all have our favourite Alfredo, however, one could search far and wide to find a more satisfying performance than this from Neil Shicoff. He gave a beautifully sensitive portrayal of the shy lover, he made full use of his talents. His sincerity as an actor/singer is as always unquestioned. His "Un di felice" in Act 1 and "Lunge da lei" to open Act2 were truly moments to remember. Edita Gruberova was a very sound Violetta. ... Read More:

Mozart's Don Giovanni may be one of the Western's world greatest artistic achievements but this modern production is too ugly for my liking.

DVD : Antonin Dvorak: Rusalka [1986] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is the only version of Rusalka I have ever been able to see. The story its self is very strange. Its about a water Nymph named Rusalka who longs to be human because is in love with a human prince who she has often seen swim in her lake. Her wish is granted and she lives in the castle of the prince who is really a weak person. The singing isn't too bad. Unfortunatly, its sung in English instead of the original Czeck and hard to understand. The costumes and sets are rather unique. Its hard to tell where things are supposed to take place.

Here are some other titles that other opera lovers will probably enjoy.

Mozart's The Magic Flute (Drottningholm Slottsteater Ann Christine Biel and Stefan Dahlberg)

Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (Drottningholm ... Read More:

DVD : Salome [1992]
This is a wonderful recording that captures the shamefully short-lived Peter Hall production at Covent Garden, featuring his then-wife Maria Ewing in the title role. This is Covent Garden at its best - the production is sumptuously and stylishly designed, steeped in great decadence - the colours zing out from the screen in excellent lighting and camera work. The supporting cast are all fabulous, Kenneth Riegel giving a particularly vivid Herod, Michael Devlin is a powerful but dignified Jokanaan. The orchestra has an air of improvised energy skillfully guided by Edward Downes. But as with any production of Salome, the central role is the key to its success. Here Maria Ewing brings a disturbing edge to the Princess, absolutely obsessed with the Baptist - you can understand why Herod ... Read More:
