The combination of Benjamin Britten's powerful War Requiem, the poetry of Wilfred Owen and the acting and cinematography in this piece make for an intense experience. Jarman was not allowed to add a single word to the text of the requiem, yet he managed to make this work both a personal and a universal statement. Don't distract yourself with popcorn: give it your total attention. The images will haunt you.

I usually grit my teeth and see things through, but with this film I hadn't the courage. Its start was slow, dreary and pretty much inaudible. I didn't know the story of The Tempest before watching this version, and within 15 minutes I was completely discouraged that I ever would know the story. I think Prospero is supposed to be a "goodie", but he seemed mad, bad and dangerous to me. Although I was mildly intrigued at the appearance of Toyah Wilcox as the heroine, it wasn't enough to keep me watching. Other Shakespeare adaptations I have enjoyed are Much Ado About Nothing (Brannagh) and Hamlet (Mel Gibson).

Beyond Caravagio's art there is very little evidence to support an in depth biographical study. What there is (principally a few police records) may or may not suggest a violent man prone to fits of jealous rage and violent behaviour. Jarman, however, provides a beautifully realised poetical interpretation, charged with a latent sexuality, that conveys a complex blend of urban poverty and aristocratic patronage. Jarman succeeds in placing a 'modern day' Caravaggio amongst his baroque compositions, recognising the artists's immense talent for the human form, light and shadow and use of colour. The acting is awesome and the sets show how a highly imaginative crew can pull together the essence of a period with grace and historical insight. Amazing. ... Read More:

The Last of England is like jarman's The garden, The Angelic conversation, Glitterbug and even Blue (in a quircky sort of way), a movie that consists of film- and sound colages. No lineary narrative, no dialogue, just found footages, super 8 visuals and a bizarre collection of music: original score by Simon Turner, and existing pieces like that of Barry Adamson, Andy Gill, a song that is called 'Disco death', and the stunning voice of Diamanda Galas. never has an atmosphere been so utterly depressing and yet ever so arresting and captivating. Jarman is a visual poet, a visionair of it's own, talking through series of disturbing images about opression, alienatiuon and downfall of society as we know it. This is cinema-non-grata at it's ... Considering the context for this film I felt spiritually uplifted by Jarman's poetry and courageous attempt to juxtapose physical deterioration against the beauty of living and the experience of love. Some of his films (e.g. Angelic Conversation and Last of England) provide only a fractured narrative and fragmentary imagery but offer a cohesion that makes the whole feel like a transcendental meditation unsurpassed in the history of film. Blue goes one step futher and leaves it to the viewer to ponder a blue screen and wonder 'what if....'.

Jubilee is a very bad film. It is virtually without plot, and the quality of acting is beyond reproach. The writer clearly had a chip on his shoulder and, rather than conferring his opinions through the use of storytelling and metaphor, there are an endless number of lengthy, pretentious soliloquies with not much else going on. Oh, except for a few bare breasts and pointless violence - neither of which further the story in any fashion.

If you enjoyed The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle - you will not enjoy this.

The Garden is a collagefilm, combining images, shot on super 8 with a soundtrack by long time collaborator Simon Fisher Turner that consists of music, noises, soundcapes and spoken words; it's a sort of follow up to Jarman's The Last of England (1987) in which he used the same techniques. The result is nevertheless nothing like 'the same' but inspiring new and of a staggering beauty. A gay couple represents Jesus and through a series of surreal and absurd visuals, the passion and condemning of Christ is being represented. There is no story told out loud, it's within the subconscious of the movie itself, and within that of the viewer. Never has a 'homemovie' been so professionally done that is is suitable for a large (cinema) audience, and yet, ... Read More:

Although there is no accounting for the audacious and experimental style in which artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman has put together this offbeat biography of the famed philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, one can't help feeling a little disappointed by the slight and unimaginative focus the film gives to the real life concerns of this great and forward thinking individual. As the previous reviewer points out, if you (much like myself) know little to nothing about the philosophical or biographical background of Wittgenstein the man, then this film really offers very little in the way of enlightenment; never giving the audience the chance to gain real insight into the character or the events of his life, save perhaps, for a few brief scenes included to prove a poinr. I found it staggering the lack of DVD's to do with one of the most influential bands of all time. This DVD is as good as you can buy when it comes to The Smiths. It features a selection of TOTP appearences (which are obviously mimed), some music videos and a strange compilation at the end. This will give you an insight into the style and manner of The Smiths but it all seems very lacking. The main problem was that none of the songs were being performed live. Surely there can be some live material that can be released on DVD? What about the gig which Rank was taken from? This DVD was interesting but was a far cry from the complete picture.
