I saw the whole short season of ITV Austen adaptations from which the three featured here were chosen and the main mystery to me is why it was that by far the the best of them - 'Persuasion', with Rupert Penry Jones and the excellent Sally Hawkins - was not included in this set. This 'Mansfield Park' is especially poor, partly because Billie Piper - (a decent actress to be sure) is miscast. Even her looks, with her trademark bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows, are simply wrong for a lead Austen part. For Mansfield Park, look for the greatly superior version starring Frances O' Connor as Fanny Price.

Yes, this does indeed make the other version look paltry. I love all the performances, but Mark Strong's Mr. Knightly, and Prunella Scale's Mrs. Bates are particularly fine. A beautifully and subtly made adaptation.

Messiah 1 & 2. Such an interesting offering from the BBC and Paramount. It's really well written, well acted and well shot. The international market ensured there was a need for London buses and a few famous landmarks to denote place. One of it's failings is the communication of time/season. In the Boris Starling book (incidently the author makes an appearence as Bartholomew) there is an acute sense of seasonal change and the oppressive heat of a summer in London- it's a minor gripe. It's such a clever, taut filmic style BBC series.

ross kemp blows me away with his performance as henno garvie an SAS leader who is a true leader and a great influence on other troops. this series is unbelievable and is the best TV show ever. watch it and be prepared to see the best show ever, watch out for ricky mann as well because his character is fantastic as well, buy it and avoid the rubbish on tv at the minute like heroes.

what a fantastic series Henno (Ross Kemp yes ladies Grant from Eastenders) is the typical hard arse Seargeant which he plays very well and Jamie Draven (Billy Elliot) plays his roll very well the weaponry and equipment that are used is awesum night goggles and the rest of the boys toys are just great, If you are a fan of the SECRET SERVICE then this is what you should be buying. I was also very shocked to see real life Ex SAS hero Chris Ryan in series 1 for those who aint got a clue who he is he was the man the man who got away avaded capture in the classic true life story of the Bravo 2 zero team in the first gulf war facing the desert heat during the day and the freezing cold temps at night sadly tho 3 members of the team were killed. treat yourself gents over ... I think not only did ITV mess up with their roster but the way the 3 key characters were killed off was very poor. Clearly they have all left before they shot their departures so their deaths are visually very weak played by doubles with hidden faces. The lack of emotion from kept on their deaths is also noticeable but I can't blame him considering the farce. The rest of the season for me is a poor distraction from the loss of the key characters. Their replacements are too wooden to build up the level of charisma we have seen. The absence of the com's and Hereford HQ also make it more diluted. I don't know what happened behind the scenes at ITV at the end of season 2 but ITV was really not on the ball come season 3. They had gold but traded it for bronze. ... Read More:

The Hanging Gale is a truly rare drama. It focuses on one of the Irish Famines of the 1840s. Intelligently acted and with a fine script - this drama puts a human face on incredible human suffering. The characters, both English and Irish are seen as individuals - this is not a simple piece of political propaganda. The Hanging Gale tries hard to give a balanced picure - the English characters of this drama are never stereotyped villains. In fact the Hanging Gale raises questions for today: questions that stretch far further than the shores of Ireland. Its been quite a number of years ago now but I do remember seeing the TV Adaptation of The Sculptress on BBC1. I think the acting by Pauline Quirke, who played Olive Martin, was quite chilling and showed that she could move away from the role of Sharon she played in Birds of a Feather and other comedic roles she was used to. You were also convinced of Olive's innocence within the film. But I do look forward to reading the novel version of The Sculptress to make comparisons between the TV Adaptation and the novel quite soon.

I've just finished watching the first two episodes of this second season. The print to DVD transfer seems much cripser and cleaner, and the audio is much clearer (although still in mono). The character dynamics are more dramatic than over with Sylvia's heavy hand in full force, and a new character Hillary adds a youthful charm to the team. If you liked the 1st season, it only gets better.

I was so excited to see that, when I checked (without much hope) to see if this series had been released, to see that it actually had been! After all, I've only been waiting more than a decade...I loved these charactors, loved the series & look forward to seeing it again.
