What really makes this film a joy to watch is Don Siegels ability as a story teller. He has an uncanny ability to avoid the pitfalls of less professional directors. He is not trying to change the world, or blow your mind with amazement, instead he completely understands the scope of his project and presents the material in a simple streamlined mannor, completely uncluttered of any pretentious notion of trying to make the ultimate sprawling epic. Nothing is overtly dramatized here, there are no soppy Spielbergian moments, no grandiose speaches, no orchestra swells. He knew this was pure entertainment and let it play for exactly what it is. Having owned the original Dirty Harry DVD collection which was released back in 2002,I was looking forward to this all new release and I was not dissapointed all of the original films have been given another re-master,not just the picture but also the sound has been given the dolby 5.1 remaster as well and if you have a surround sound system then eastwoods 44 magnum sounds just like the real thing!!. As well as the original extras there is a host of new extras and commentarys plus the addition of a small hardback book,production notes,Callaghans police ID badge! and also a poster and limited edition art cards complete the extras,sadly though no .44 Magnum included!!!. What with their impressive roster of 1930s GOTHIC-HORROR chillers and this batch of essential 1950s sci-fi, UNIVERSAL have served, extremely well, the requirements of those interested in fantasy cinema that stretches further back than just the latest multiplex blockbuster. I bought this set for my husband who is a huge fan. One of the titles - Breezy does not have Clint in it, it was directed by him which I was unaware of at the time I bought it.

A film which creates tension at times, though does uphold its continuity throughout. Lack of CGI obviously accepted, this plot nevertheless is full of holes. The motivation behind the otherworldly beings wanting to inhabit earth is never established, the consequence of which is a lack of consistent atmosphere. Without wanting to give anything more than the basic plot establishment away to those who have not sen this film, it would suffice to say that the method of transfrmation leaves a great deal too much to the imagination, and does not provide a basic framework upon which to hang any imagined theories about how the transplantation of an alien mind into a human body would take place. This is a great, great film. Eastwood at his cool best. Up there with Papillon in terms of classic true escape stories. Filmed on location in Alcatraz it is chillingly authentic and the ending leaves you thinking ...

All I have got to say is that John Wayne redeems himself in this, his final movie. I got so disillusioned with him in True Grit, Rooster Cockburn and Brannigan that I had to make a hard decision about whether I should watch this film at all. I made the right decision. I consider myself an aficianado of the genre, and this Western was a Western to end all Westerns. John Wayne knew it and he put every last drop of his being into it. Sadly, very few notable Westerns were made subsequent to this apart from Tom Horn. All wonderful stuff.

This is a top thriller and a great DVD release. The extras are pretty good and a lot of the scenes look a lot clearer. A good job and recommended.

This is a stark, moving, tragic and poignant anti-war tour-de-force that makes the point that there are no glamorous heroes, just those who become so in desperate situations. An earlier reviewer mentioned Leonard Rosenman's memorable score for this film - this, along with the production values and some of the production credits, is reflected in the long-running (1962-67)U.S. drama series "Combat!" which somehow has the same integrity and quality running through it. I'm convinced the movie must somehow have inspired the TV series (also available on DVD and worth every penny).

The Dirty Harry opus consists of five disks; each on a separate disk, which is of a strong material. I personally find it difficult to remove the first, and the eponymous film myself, for fear of breaking it, the disk itself is held in too securely. The other disks are not difficult, if at all, to remove, there is a clasp on the front disk, of each of the other four disks, which holds them in securely, if you replace them correctly. The first film, Dirty Harry, consists of five extras or special features: Cast & Crew, Original Documentary, Dirty Harry: The Original, Interview Gallery, and the Theatrical Trailer.
