What makes this version of Emma enjoyable is the exquisite costumes, locations and colour. I love the portrayals of Miss Bates, Mr & Mrs Elton & Mrs Weston (or poor Miss Taylor). Gwyneth Paltrow makes a pleasant Emma, but although I love her as an actress, I don't think she has really identified with the character of Emma. I am not convinced of Harriet Smith or Frank Churchill either, they are just not authentic to the characters. Mr Knightley is just about passable. The main problem with this is that the story has been severely condensed and I feel alot of the important scenes in the book have been dropped, which has greatly reduced the effect of the story. The TV version starring Kate Beckinsale & Mark Strong have much stronger ... Read More:

This came as a bit of a surprise, suffice it to say, due to the photo used on the cover. I expected less but was so pleasantly surprised!

I read Nicholas Nickleby years ago and have no plans to read it in the near future. That said, I had forgotten much of the story. It is obvious, though, that even without remembering much of the book nor the story, there is much that has been left out of the movie. No matter. What is left here is perfect. Although we may never know why Ralph Nickleby lost his ten thousand pounds just by watching the film, we understand that there must have been some behind-the-scenes scheming going on and that's perfectly fine.

Although definitely a drama, the comedic elements work so well here to lighten the ... Read More:

Infamous quite simply aces Capote. Why? Because director Douglas McGrath has the passion, insight and sensitivity needed to fully do justice to a human being and writer as fascinating and complicated as Truman Capote. Needless to say, the director's commentary is one of the best I've ever listened to. Totally recommended.

oh dear. I watched about half an hour of this tosh and had to switch it off in case I went into a coma due to boredom.
Basically this is the story of how a grammar teacher pretends to be a CIA officer to stop his wife complaining about his poor wages. This attracts the attention of the real CIA.
The story is unbeilveable (he gets the idea for the CIA from a logo on a bath towel), the acting lacklustre and the 1960s setting patronising and dull.
Avoid.

These are 3 very different tales each with their own gentle charms.

The most outstanding of the 3 has to be Emma. On its own it scores higher than the whole collection. This delightful version sees Ms Paltrow working hard on a convincing english accent and winning. It is a beautiful tale of a young woman who is so wrapped up in organising the love lives of others that she fails to notice her own. The actors work together well to provide a beautiful feel-good period drama that keeps much of the gentle humour from the novel and moves fast enough to entertain all but the most die-hard period drama spoil-sports. The only slight on the movie was the miscasting of the gorgeous Ewan MaGreggor. Fantastic as he is, he didn't work in this. But it does not interfere with the overall charm ... Read More:
