This film, based on the dreadful events of 1990's Sierra Leone (limbs hacked off, families massacred etc) is in the 4 to 5 star range. It could be upsetting for some people to watch, because it DOES show brutality, sadism, indifferent UN officials suffering from compassion-fatigue. In a word, it is realistic. My wife, the daughter of an ex-RAF air traffic controller, who was born in Tanganyika territory (now Tanzania), found it very upsetting to see, partly because as a child she watched something very similar happening across the border river in Congo in the 1960's.

The film does show the Africans as people, not just a backdrop to fighting and adventuring...and for once, the white people are not shown as almost all wicked or stupid, ... Read More:

A rousing story about a black platoon facing prejudice and annilation during the American civil war. Matthew Broderick's finest performance as the leader of the first all black regiment fighting the confederates and racism from their own Union army. Supported by the fine Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The plight of these brave men will emotionally move you, possibly to tears, although mine was more of a controlled welling, though my lower lip did quiver when the credits rolled.

It was a risky storyline but i do believe they pulled it off. Tom Cruise plays a borderline alcoholic/burn out U.S cavalry soldier who travels to Japan to train the Emperors army in the art of modern warfare. He finds a country on the brink of civil war as the ancient Samurai clash with the modernist elements of the 'new' Japanese government.

Cruise is captured during the very first battle and is incarcerated in a mountain village of the Samurai. He quickly learns their language (yeah right) and begins to empathise with their ways and traditions. His loyalty turns and he finds himself standing shoulder to shoulder against the new Japanese army, sent to remove the Samurai.

Good action scenes abound.

I recently purchased this product and i was skeptical at first as i am about all blu - rays if it was live up its reputation. This movie definitely did. Probably one of Tom Cruises finest roles, he plays the traumatized character of Captain Nathan Algren, a man who regrets the things he has done, after being hired by the Japanese government to root out the infamous Samurai rebels during a time where japan is discovering what the western world has to offer. The Samurai believe to be fighting fo r the soul of Japan. After being captured in battle, Algren soons learns that the life of the Samurai is much simpler then his own, and one of great beauty.

Anyway getting back to the purpose of this review. The picture quality is outstanding at some scenes ... Read More:

It is hard not to focus on the cast the spotless performance by every single actor and actress in this movie. What makes Legends of Fall a must-watch film is the extraordinary story that lies within. The viewers will be gobsmacked by events that will shatter a family and reunite a bond of love that carries an unbearable ethical burden. This is not a straight-forward movie, by this I mean there are several issues going on at the same time, constantly intriguing the viewer, yet the way this movie is made manages not to confuse its audience.

This movie is powerful because it emphasises on how love will always find its way, no matter where and when. Throughout the movie you will be filled with sadness, joy, anxiety, laughter, fear - the sort of "list" ... Read More:

General I am not the greatest fan of Tom Cruise (this is actually the only film of his I will willingly watch) but I am a great fan of Japanese history and culture and although this film makes Braveheart and 300 look historically accurate in places I still greatly enjoyed it and consider it to be one of my all time favourite films.

The film sees the drunken American Army Captain Nathan Algren hired by the modernising Japanese government to train their troops to fight the rebel Samurai leader Katsumoto. When Algren is captured in battle, however, he comes to get to know his enemy and get to know the Samurai way of life.

As I have already stated I am a fan of Far Eastern history and as such I must say that this film does terribly butcher this ... Read More:

I can't stomach the actor (usually) but , blimey...he has shocked the pants off me! Leo can really act! This is a surprisingly good film, fine acting all-round, and it makes you think! God, how it makes you think. If I ever win the lottery, half will go to Amnesty International...I vow! How can these things happen, why do we let it happen, why are human beings such slime, or so good, or so heart-wrenchingly poor and oppressed! You could go mad just thinking about it. A good film makes you think...ergo...this is a good film. Well worth a watch!

This great Hollywood blockbuster is one of a series of thought provoking movies along with the constant gardener and shooting dogs .Filmed in South Africa , London and Mozambique ,the result is excellent and the photography in this movie is a good as it gets .

It tells the story of two people who must find a very large diamond for very different reasons , one to save his son and the other to become rich . The action scenes are very realistic is terms of showing the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone as Saving private Ryan showed the landings in Normandy .

Leonardo DiCaprio deserves praise for his portrait of the South African mercenary he developed very convincing South African accent , he and Djimon Honsou work very well together and there is great scene ... Read More:

What we have here is an average attempt at manifesting one of the possible and likely threats of our time; Terrorism. To much of an extent, the film captures this perfectly, and we learn how such people operate, they're motives etc etc... However, the film fails in its layout - the way it keeps switching from Denzel and co's personal issue's and feelings to the job in hand leaves you feeling out-of-place.

It should also be noted that Bruce Willis and a helicopter with missile cannons don't mix, when it comes to realism. The result is borderline laughable as he struts about in his army uniform.

Though its been directed and presented well, a little more thought into making the plot real would have benefited the film. Taking the American public and segregating ... Read More:
