Mozart's last opera is a seria, whose secco recitative (sung speech accompanied by forte piano) was done by his student Franz Sussmayr instead of the composer... So Zurich Opera uses that as an excuse to make an Italian Singspiel out of it.

All secco recit are replaced with Italian dialog. Might have worked had the cast been able to speak the language convincingly, but they don't. Even the lone native speaker Eva Mei sounds unnatural... Worst off is the magnificent Vesselina Kasarova, whose speaking voice is a tenth the size and masculinity of her singing voice. So she darkens it, but relapses at times in more dramatic passages... and that's just so darn weird.

Staging is minimalistic and updated to look like a very ... Read More:

This Opera is wonderful, This is the first time I have seen Oliver Widmer, and was very impressed. The sound quality of this DVD is very poor and I therefore do not think you can hear the quality of the singers to their best ability. It goes without saying the Juan Diego is spectacular. I would not recommend this particular recording simply because of the poor sound quality. the stage set was imaginative, and some lovely comic moments too.

I can't recommend this too highly. Leo Nucci, by this stage in his career, can't summon much in the way of legato, but he's always reliable and usually more than that, a good old high-octane performance of the title role. Elena Mosuc sings very prettily as Gilda, and I love Laszlo Polgar's "Christopher-Lee-as-Jack-The-Ripper" interpretation of Sparafucile, but the main reason to buy this is the Duke of Piotr Beczala.
In this role he stands comparison with many of the great tenors of the past. He looks and acts well, the voice is reminiscent of Wunderlich or sometimes Gedda but with di Stefano's intensity with the words, and the sheer control, musicianship and elegance of his singing is a wonder

DVD : Richard Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
A good "modern" production but it can't replace the old New York Met production that was old when they bought it in from Glyndebourne.
The great Jessye Norman can move me to tears in "Es gibt ein reich" whereas Susan Anthony makes little impact despite being a very good singer.
Jon Villars is probably the best Bacchus around and copes well with an almost impossibly difficult part but the production doesn't seem to come to terms with the godly otherworldliness of his role, all that faffing around with the curtains reminded me of Morecombe and Wise.
Iride Martinez and Sophie Koch are fine voices and act well too. But memories of La Battle are not eclipsed and the comedia aspects are no better in Dresden than they were in New York, ... Read More:

Along the years, there's been some argument in the musical press whether Busoni was a great composer or if he rather was, as Richard Strauss's own pun on himself, a first class second rate one. Well, this work, one of the most intriguing operas written during the 20th Century, is indeed a very serious argument towards establishing Busoni among the great composers. It has been slow in gaining recognition since its premiere in 1925, with all too infrequent performances, a kind of cult item that saw the stage, alongside Pfitzner's Palestrina and Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, only in solemn, festive occasions and mostly in the German-speaking orbit, the three works characterised as they are by an aura of deep philosophic content, in their different approaches dealing with ...
