For me, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie were, are and always shall be, the quintessential Jeeves and Wooster! As English as Pimms and Cucumber sandwiches, this glorious P.G. Wodehouse creation lifts the veil on the altogether more carefree life in 1920's high society, ironically observed through the wit of one of our great writers. And who better to bring it to the screen than two of our greatest comic talents.

Sadly, P.G. Wodehouse has suffered of late from the tight mouthed disapproval of Political Correctness. I wish that some people could just get over their left wing angst about "toffs" though, and see this for what it is - a wry and witty gallop through an entirely different era. This is comic farce, and it pokes fun at absolutely ... Read More:

Insp.North (Kate Buffery) was a totally credible charactrer as a police officer just like Jane Tennison. Unfortunately her replacement, Victoria Smurfit is quite beyond belief. She has no credibility whatsoever as a polce officer (in episodes 7 and above).

She spoils an outstanding series - Don't bother with the more recent short episodes..

I didn't think Jeeves & Wooster could ever be succesfully transferred to screen until I saw this series. Absolutely brilliant! Lovely settings, costumes, music etc to back up the characters. Minor quibbles: frequent casting changes (e.g. three different Madeleine Bassets over the course of the series!), the third series is not quite as good as the first two and the fourth series is not as good as the third, oh, and of course the infuriating anti-piracy advert that you can't skip...my dvd player will only pause for about a minute before going back to the beginning, so every time I make a cup of tea, answer the phone etc...I have to watch that horrible thing all over again! I loved this series though, have watched it so much that I'm probably ... Read More:

I don't want to write too much as it will simply dilute the value of my comment - True Blue is a great film. For anyone who has even been close to water, let alone been an oarsman or coxswain, this is a complete must. It makes you feel good, it's inspiring and it's utterly cool. Buy it now, you will not regret it.

I don't know what age audience the film makers were targeting but I imagine 13 to 18 would find it enjoyable, or if you have not read the book. If you have you will find it a very disappointing adaptation. I suppose some changes to the story line are inevitable if one only has 100 minutes to deliver over 240 pages of complex writing, but none of those changes enhanced enjoyment of the novel for me. The acting was so-so, over aggressive Tara Fitzgerald wearing one sultry expression from start to finish, and Anthony Delon delivering slightly over the top "Frenchness". Which is a shame....I came across the novel whilst on holiday in Cornwall (but of course!), and being a fan of du Maurier's work I thought I'd give it a go one afternoon and I could not put it down, ... DVD : The Last Detective: Series 2 [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The last detective is Detective Constable Davies --"Dangerous" Davies to his coworkers. He's the least likely cop to find himself in a dangerous situation, or so they think, and his boss has said that Davies is the last detective he'd ever assign to an important case. Davies (Peter Davison) may be a bit of a plodder, may be too nice for his own good, but he's also thorough, conscientious and firmly committed to find the bad guys wherever the search takes him. In The Last Detective series, Davies' cases always start out being mundane and, on the surface, uncomplicated. But Dangerous Davies has a habit of uncovering hidden motives, long-ago murders, ruthless ambitions and, just about as often, victims who have no other resource than Davies' commitment to justice.

All I could think adout was Chariots of Fire while watching this film. Perhaps is was just my imagination. Did the director say to the score composer "think 'Chariots...'?"
The acting is good and it's always great to see the most beautiful sport on film.
It's in the nature of many rowers to scrutinise anothers technique from the bank as they row past and as an ex-rower it's impossible not to see that most of the actors, although doing a fine job on the water, are not rowers which does detract from the believability somewhat. But then, no-one said rowing was easy. All in all a good film. I would recommend it, especially before race-day, though do read the original book by Dan Topolski.
