Dirty war in Algerie, between FLN (employing in the 50' same "terror tactis" of today terrorists in the same place .... ah the story ...) and French troops. Not the "abitual, brutal,Legionnaires" but a platoon of young boys (with some "old fox" reduces from WWII) leaded by the classic Officer and Gentlemen (only in principle ..) and by a veteran "hardboiled" NCO. The plot is poor (battlefield "routine") but action scenes are well made (with a correct choise of weaponry - from MAT 49 machineguns to the chopters and the Vampire "attack" jet). A good, sad, bloody war film, in an "exotic" scenario.

Bruce Willis is always in danger of being a parody of himself, most often typecast as the maverick save-the-world cop a-la-Die Hard, but in fact he has tried to explore other character portrayals in recent years. Yes, he's a cop again in this one, but he never looked as if he was about to do any yippee-kai-yays at any time. Thanks mainly to a solid writing base from a Robert Crais novel of the same name, Hostage is a pretty good thriller and not as formulaic as many might expect. The odd thing though is that there were a few signature images that reminded me of other seemingly unrelated films, notably The Crow - one of the hostage takers, a psycho named Mars and played by Ben Foster, looked bizarrely like Brandon Lee's portrayal of Eric Draven a decade ... I have to agree with the positive comments made by the other reviewers. Its a frantic battle for survival for a rag tag bunch of petty thieves, french special forces and a few factory workers who fall under siege from a vicious Albanian criminal and his high tech forces. It's an enjoyable romp with elements of assault on precinct 13 and it's a nice change from the similar genre hollywood churns out by the dozen.

Set in the Kabyle mountains of Algeria this excellently made war film certainly pulls no punches. The extreme volence of the FLN and of some of the French begins to seep into the soul of our hero - young Lt Terrien. The film does not flinch from showing the slaughter by the fellaghas, the torture of prisoners by the French, and the scene of the napalm attack and its results are some of the most powerful that I have seen. In the end, trapped between the millstones of the Revolution and the French Republic is is hardly surprising so many of the individuals are ground to powder. The eventual fate of our hero is perhaps the least believable part of the film but it does not prevent this being a film with an impact. It avoids the usual temptations of vilifying one side or the other. ... Read More:

DVD : The Nest [2002] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Highly nervous thriller, where each shot is a masterpiece in itself. Good characters, excellent actors, good lyrics and a solid plot. Contrary to many films of the same genre THE NEST also focuses on the human aspect of the characters: their fear of dying and suffering, their empathy with the others, their sense of solidarity and the cowardice among some of them. - Ralph B.
