I teach GCSE drama in a rough Saff London Comp and get the students hooked with Baz Lurhrmann's modern version of it and then to teach them more of what Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote the play, I show them this one by Zeffirelli - it works a treat. It is beautifully done, universal in its themes and appeal and the acting is rivitingly good - especially the very young and beautiful Olivia Hussy, though Michael York as a petulant Tybalt is equally good.

I'm studying this play and bought this Franco Zafirrelli / Elizabeth Burton version as it was dirt cheap on amazon. I found it more enjoyable than the BBC version (as did my wife), even though we both preferred John Cleese's to Richard Burton's Petruchio. It gains over the BBC version by not having that awkward out of place hymn at the end (and after Shakespeare note-worthily eschewed religious arguments in Kate's final speech)! Also, the dialogue is here more clearly and comprehensibly spoken; it is just a shame it misses out the majority of it! There are a lot of visual gags to retain the interest of those who do not follow the language used. Unfortunately it also misses some of the plot points for the minor characters along the way, although ... Read More:

This film does not need many words to describe it.

It chronicles the life of the Messiah and spreads the truth of His words. It is a wonderful film and Robert Powell portrays Christ in the most beautiful, uplifting way imaginable. It brought tears to my eyes on many occasions during the film.

This film should be seen by everyone, it is quite simply breathtaking.

This film of Verdi's Otello has an awful lot going for it. Ably led by the masterful conducting of Lorin Maazel, the performance enshrines marvellous portrayals of Otello and Desdemona by Domingo and Ricciarelli who deliver performances which both vocally and on the screen often touch greatness. With the typically sumptuous sets of Zefferelli, the film is often quite memorable (for example, at the unforgettable close of the first act).

Yet, as previous reviewers have pointed out, it is indeed a pity that the director chose to cut the Willow Song. That said, with a running time of 1hr 58Mins, Zefferelli wields the axe on Verdi's score with disconcerting ease, with the consequence that the poetic beauty of Boito's libretto and the dramatic sweep ... I was living in Perugia, just 20 minutes from Assisi, when I saw this film for the first time. I knew nothing about it, and as it was a boring weekend, I went to see it on Friday night. For the life of me, I have no idea how many times I watched the film, I was at every showing that weekendm with only brief breaks for dinner.
The title derives from a poem Francis wrote, the Hymn of the Creation. In the original Italian it read "Beato sia per fratello sole, beato sia per sorella luna", cut down a little. In English, "Praise the Lord for Brother Sun, Praise the Lord for Sister Moon".
I think this film works better in Italian, even thought it was written in English. There is something about the beauty of the Italian language which is reflectewd in the ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite ¨romantic¨ movies very well made film by a famous director, still as good to watch now as when it was released in 1981.Get the box of tissues ready on standby.Keep an eye out for early acting performances from ¨Tom Cruise¨ and ¨James Spader¨
Great Movie and still a classic!

This film has got to be an all time classic and also the biggest tear jerker ever to be made. Ive seen this film hundreds of times and it still makes me cry. The actors are amazing and the little boy gave such an award winning performance. I think its one of the best films EVER!!!

I totally agree with the "5 stars for the movie but 1 star for the DVD product". In Italy (where the series is quite famous due to the Zeffirelli's touch) two versions have been released recently. One in 2007, the complete and un-edited TV version and one 4-disc edition in 2008 by Mondo Home Entertainment with the addition of never-before-seen scenes plus interviews and other special features (based on descriptions, I have not aquired it yet). Language is Italian and English 2.0. If you want to look for it you need to type "Gesu' di Nazareth".

I was very disappointed. Admittedly the filming was very good, but I was expecting much more. In future I will stick with grand opera. Am I wrong but did not Domingo have a famous aria to sing in Pagliacci? Where was it?

Surprisingly good, and another side to Mel Gibson. Don't have much to do with Shakespear normally but got this free in a Sunday paper and decided to watch it. Pleasantly surprised to find me gripped enough to watch it all the way through.
