Steve Martin (The man with two brains) stars as fire chief Charlie Bales, a man with a big nose. This unusual feature makes him believe he will be able to be with a girl he has just met, the beautiful Roxanne.

Martin gives a good performance as the insecure but happy fire chief. His best moment is the famous bar scene where he is challenged to think of 20 insults regarding his big nose, which is the most interesting point of the film.

The over sized nose is the big talking point of the town and the use of it was quite interesting as it brought out a touching subject regarding appearance and what other people though of it. As the film is a comedy it is the focus on pretty much all of the jokes and uses it well, with ... Read More:

Gather three Australians and turn the conversation from footy to the Lindy Chamberlain case. One of you is almost certain to survive the encounter. Although the survivor will almost certainly be only you. Still arousing the highest passions among Australians, the death of baby Azaria Chamberlain and the subsequent jailing of her mother for murder remains the most noted legal and social episode there. Even this film and new evidence has failed to clear the Chamberlain's name, indicative of the bizarre circumstances surrounding Azaria's death. "The dingo took my baby" remains a derisive expression in the Australian lexicon.

Spellbinding isn't a trite phrase in describing this film, even if you already know the story. Schepisi ... Read More:

"Fierce Creatures" was marketed as a somewhat adventurous endeavour in teaming up much of the old team from the highly acclaimed "A Fish called Wanda" to do another film that was completely different and had nothing the same, except much of the cast.

Does this have the same sparkle? The short answer is no, but it is still good viewing. It tells the story of a highly greedy and successful business magnate, Rod McCain (Kevin Kline) who has just taken over a zoo in England. However, business regulations require that the zoo return 20% of revenue or it will be shut down. Put in charge is Rollo Lee (John Cleese), who is then somewhat overthrown by new recruit Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis) and McCain's 'idiot' son Vince (also Kline). Essentially ... Read More:

This film is, how should one put it, an elegant and eloquent trifle, full of the verbal fripperies and embellishments that come with wealth and influence, but ultimately leaving an empty experience for all concerned. It's a tale of how easily a conman can take in people by adopting their mannerisms and lifestyle, to be come as it were "one of us." All you need is a little research, to be a skilled mimic and weave a spell with your words. Ah, but the rub is that the victims can then dine out for months on such a tale. To be self-deprecating in telling how you were deceived is to win over a fresh audience for the deception. So - a moral tale on how the mighty are never fallen for long!

This succeeds where many might have failed by virtue of a truly ... Read More:

Schepisi has directed a magical bitter-sweet drama, helped by a cast reading like a who's who of British Londoner character actors: Courtenay, Hemmings, Caine, Hoskins, Mirren, Winstone and co turn in spellbinding performances in telling the story of their intermingled lives over the passage of time via the occasion of a journey to scatter the ashes of Jack (Caine), the town butcher and husband to Mirren, from Margate pier.

Not only that, but the cast playing their younger selves are first rate too and actually LOOK like the people they are supposed to be (especially JJ Feild, who looks the spitting image of a young Caine, and Kelly Reilly who bursts with sexual energy as Mirren's predecessor; the young Hemmings is played by the actor's son Nolan.)

I have watched this movie over and over again and it's one of those you never tire of seeing over and over again. I'll admit I'm a Meg Ryan fan and a Walter Matthau fan (not a Tim Robbins one, not in this type of role). It's just simultaneously FUNNY (those oldies trying to get Meg to love the right guy) and ROMANTIC (when it ends, you sit there "wish that could have happened to me"!).

For me, when you get British actors of this calibre together making a film I really expect it to be something special, because Caine, Winstone and Hoskins are among my favourites. Sadly I felt let down by a story that had little meaning and never really seemed to be going anywhere. The acting itself was good as you would expect but the film itself had an uninteresting plot which was made even worse by Michael Caines fairly early departure.

Bought this on the strength of the Emmy awards. Its a good story, and does not disappoint. Ed Harris is a great actor and leads this cast well.
