"A Man For All Seasons" is one of my all time favourite films. It is absolutely faultless and could not possibly be bettered. I have seen it so many times I think I know the whole script by heart! Every actor and actress are perfect for their part.I could mention them all but then I would go on for ages so I will confine myself to just a few comments. There will never be a better cameo performance on screen of Henry VIII to match that of Robert Shaw; Wendy Hillier's leavetaking of her husband in the Tower brings tears to the eyes every time; Orson Welles is just awesome as Cardinal Wolsey; and Paul Scofield, of course, is matchless in every way. "Utopia" by the way IS mentioned - in the very first scene!

From the days when doorstop novels (or at least large chunks of them) were turned into films rather than mini-series, From Here to Eternity may be toned down to please both the censors and the US Army, whose co-operation was vital to the film, but it's still a superb piece of film-making that slips in a few powerful punches between the lines.

Set in Pearl Harbor in the months leading up to the Japanese attack, it focuses on two professional soldiers: Prewitt (Montgomery Clift), a hard-headed ex-boxer given 'the treatment' by his commanding officer to force him to fight in the regimental boxing championships, and the company's Top Sergeant (Burt Lancaster), who is having an affair with the officer's frigid wife (Deborah Kerr).

At my English prep school in the mid-80s the Day of the Jackal was approved viewing for the boys, despite its adult themes, because it offered up a role model of how an English gentleman should behave. Edward Fox is perfect in the lead role: impossibly dapper and handsome, emotionally cold, well organised, hates the French and travels in style. The Day of the Jackal is a beautifully shot film, full of glossy mid-70s Europe, summer, good clothes, cigarettes and hotels. It tells of a cat and mouse game between an assassin and the French security services out to get that assassin, but with little information to go on. I have found this to be one of few films that reward repeated viewing. Enjoy.

If you have never seen High Noon then it is most certainly time that you did. This is a very fine suspense Western. The story concerns a Town Marshall, Will Kane portrayed by Gary Cooper and his increasingly desperate attempts to enlist the help of unwilling townspeople to stand against a gang of vengeance seeking killers who are shortly to descend on the town. The film was directed by Fred Zinneman who was not noted for his Westerns, unless you count Oklahoma.Zinneman uses the artful device of real time to crank up the suspense as we are constantly shown the ticking clock. The film was made in black and white which adds to the starkness and realism of the film.
The film opens with the bad guys meeting up and starting their long ride into to town accompanied by the terrific Frankie ... Read More:

This is a superb package, two Oklahomas for the price of one, it`s quite enjoyable if you are a film buff to compare the cinemascope version to the Todd AO as they were shot separately not simultaneously.
The extras are top notch with voiceover commentaries over each film available, from which you can learn a lot.
There is a singalong option and I thought it was a nice touch to include an option whereby you can just play all the musical numbers.
Its true that the Todd AO version lacks some quality but I found this only a minor thing, it is so nice to see the new version.
All in all you could not ask for more.

Firstly, I agree with the view that this portrayal of Thomas More is (I expect) wildy idealised. Bolt was obviously in awe of this man, and essentially, on the matter of his political intransigence in this one very major matter, (made into a famous martyrdom by those masters of P.R. the Catholic Church), who can blame him for admiring such integrity and courage? He has written his part beautifully: Here is a man that the viewer knows after five minutes, will not be leaving his principles for one second, even if it is the most powerful king in England's history he is at risk of upsetting. The religion versus secular rule problem is put across with great clarity, and it actually IS a very good history lesson of the facts as they happened (idealised view of More or not). Dialogue is very finely ... Read More:

Someone needs shooting at Fox or who ever did the transfer for the region 2 DVD. Some how they must have found the oldest Mono copy of this film, with an aspect ratio of 4.3 rather than the wondeful cinemascope version with full stereo sound that is available in the region 1 DVD.

DVD : The Nun's Story [1958]
This magnificent film of 1957 still shines in all its luminosity after 50 years. It reminds us of the heights to which Hollywood could rise in the old studio system, which invested its resources on quality: the actors, the director, the music, the costumes, and the splendid genuine locations, from the canals and bridges of Bruges and Antwerp to the sweeping expanse of the Congo river (The scenes at the leper colony, among many others, are fascinating.). "The Nun's Story" allows us to glimpse a slice of history of the 1930s, as it unfolds on two continents. It gives us a look back into a society, both sacred and secular, that World War II was to change irrevocably.

The superb performances of Audrey Hepburn, Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans, Mildred Natwick, and Peter Finch speak for themselves, ... Read More:
