DVD : The Skull [1965] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This Amicus film from 1965, is one of their least seen, by the general public. To my mind this flick is unsurpassed, by any of this company's other films, including their anthologies , which is what they are most renowned for (if your new to Amicus or haven't seen them, they are Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors [1965],The Torture Garden (1967),The House That Dripped Blood [1971],Tales from the Crypt/Vault of Horror (REGION 1) (NTSC), Vault Of Horror [1973],From Beyond the Grave [1973] (REGION 1) (NTSC)).

Most Amicus films have Peter Cushing in them; in this one he plays the protagonist, an anthropologist with a proclivity towards collecting Black-Arts memorabilia.

A dodgy dealer in sinister merchandise, played by Patrick ... Read More:

For the US release of Hammer's fourth Dracula film (only the third to actually feature Christopher Lee, the Count sitting out Brides of Dracula), Warner Bros. used a one-sheet of a woman's neck with a sticking plaster on it, following the title Dracula Has Risen From the Grave with the single word 'Obviously.' The film itself, however, is anything but tongue-in-cheek, and played deadly straight with a conviction the series gradually lost over the years. It's probably the best-looking of all the Hammer Dracula sequels, and also the first where Christopher Lee actually speaks. As usual he's almost a background figure for much of the film, with the bulk of the film carried by Barry Andrews' atheist student romancing Veronica Carlson's niece of Rupert Davies' ... Read More:

Ain't dat da' truth, Ruth! While this may not be as downright creepy as a few other Amicus anthology creep-fests it is certainly not what "May West" described! I don't know which film he/she was watching, but in this film a well-disguised group of creepy sociopaths enter the Carny sideshow tent of a flagrantly creepy "Dr.Diabolo", (one of the many names for "Satan"), and following his "regular performance" they're each given the opportunity to pay for a glance into their future, (* "Diabolo" burns the cash directly after collecting it!) But it's all just a "forewarning" of the inner evil that lurks within their hearts, and souls, and minds. The evil they've all managed to keep hidden from the rest of the world, (as all sociopaths do with a lifetime of acquired skills!) ... Read More:

DVD : The Deadly Bees [1967] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I was really looking forward to watching The Killer Bees on dvd as it was one of the few Amicus films I hadn't seen before. When the film was originally released it flopped badly and it's easy to see why. The basic plot concerns an ailing singer who is sent to a remote island to recover after collapsing during a recording session. While on the island she discovers someone is using fear to control a swarm of deadly bees.

When the film started with an extreamly dodgy song I knew I was in for a tough time. The film plods along at a snails pace. The special effects are pitiful even for the time (the film was made in 1966)the bee attacks are particually dissapoiting. The cast that includes Hammer favorite Michael Ripper and Guy Doleman (Thunderball and The Ipcress ... Read More:

I have been looking forward to this release for a long time. I have the Region 1 version, but I can only watch this on my computer, so to have a version I can play on my TV would be great. What a disappointment, it's FULL FRAME and not in the correct widescreen format it should be in. These DVDs are for a specialist market, who expects certain standards; and the correct format is one of them. I hope they put this right for future releases, otherwise it's back to watching my Region 1's on the computer.

I agree with all those who love this set. It's brilliant."Night Creatures", however, is not really a horror film, more a costume drama, with Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed as 18th Century smugglers. It was originally released as a second feature to "Phantom of the Opera",(also in this collection),under the title of "Captain Clegg". It's actually a pretty faithful adaptation of Russell Thorndyke's novel "Doctor Syn".This may be of use to those who didn't recognise the American title.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR 'THE VAULT OF HORROR' ONLY:

A collection of tales where five men who committed evil during their lifetime spend an eternity re-telling their stories each night. Interesting stories, though two of them feature a little 'black comedy' thrown in for good measure!

Daniel and Anna Massey play side by side as brother and sister (as in real life of course) and they certainly seem to have enjoyed it! This movie has a galaxy of stars, including; Terry Alexander, Tom Baker, Michael Craig, Denholm Elliott, Glynis Johns and Terry-Thomas.

This has not been re-mastered.

i remember seeing this series on t.v. when i was just a kid and it scared the living beejaysus outta me.i cant see what all the fuss was about now.you can see many similarites in the opening scenen with other horror films such as 28 days later, the stand, the crazies etc. there aren't any jump out of your seat moments but the atmosphere and exposure of a selfish human nature in a "survival of the fittest" setting is dark and is in itself a horror. the triffids themselves are a new species of plant that came to earth via a comet and are like big lumps of broccoli who poison and then eat their victims.99% of the population of the world is blind after a comet burned out an optical nerve in the eye, and therefore the human race is being hunted down by plants (who move at 2mph!!). ... DVD : Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors [1965]
This is old school English horror, with maximum emphasis on performances and atmosphere. The film is divided into several creepy tales regarding death and doom, and with a cast lead by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee this is a quality flick. Recommended.
