I dont understand why this programme had so many accolades, especially for Victoria Wood. Her writing, generally is fantastic, but her acting leaves a lot to be desired. I found her totally unbelievable, as are a lot of comics that turn their hand to acting..catherine tate, david walliams et al.I realise i am in the minority, i wanted to like and enjoy this, and maybe with someone different leading it, i would have.

This is why I love Victoria Wood's work! She manages to take us on a journey through all the major emotions in this type of production, and even though Pat and....is laced with her cutting wit,we are also treated to moments of tenderness.

Julie Walters is,as usual, outstanding,as is every actor represented.
One favourite moment is when the gap between Margaret (Victoria Wood) and Pat (Julie Walters) is blindingly obvious in Margaret's bedsit/flat.
Pat is telling her that she knows a really "simple" recipe using fresh pasta, basil, etc, but all Margaret can produce is tinned spaghetti!

Beautifully observed and brilliantly realised!

One of the best adaptations of a novel that I have ever seen. The 1996 BBC recreation for the small screen of Iain Banks' darkly brilliant gothic work really stands up superbly 12 years on.
Featuring a strong cast including Bill Paterson, Peter Capaldi and Joe McFadden as the male half of the McHoan clan who live on the beautiful Argyll coast in their rambling country house. The storyline focuses on missing uncle Rory who never returned from a sojourn abroad and the rivalry between the writer brothers (Paterson and Capaldi) mainly instigated by elder brother Kenneth (Paterson) who never quite forgives younger Rory (Capaldi) for getting into print first before he disappears into the wide blue yonder. The McHoan sister is married to the charming but sinister ... Read More:

Stella Rode, the wife of the new junior master at Carne School, just doesn't fit in. Carne is a British prep school with a history of preparing the sons of the upper class for lives of service and privilege. The teachers at Carne are part of this upper-class world, smug in their superiority and condescending toward those who don't fit in. Stella Rode wears her Christian beliefs on her sleeve. She does good works, collects clothes for the needy, often has a superior air about her. She also searches out secrets, uses gossip and anonymous letters to bring retribution, and doesn't hesitate to destroy a career. One night, she is beaten to death.

Days before, she wrote to Ailsa Brimley (Glenda Jackson), a relative who had experience in the war, that she ... Read More:

This is much better than most of the Catherine Cookson series.

The story centres around a girl who opts to live with her young brothers and sisters in a cave, rather than enduring the horrors of the work house.

The characters are more rounded than you expect from Cookson. This leaves plenty of scope to develop major dilemmas. Each character has to make difficult choices between following their emotions or following a safer route to security. In the end, all the characters have to make compromises.

Much of the action takes place outside in idyllic settings. This reinforces the value of freedom, even if it means being homeless.

There are those who won't like the ending, but I felt that it was in keeping with the sensibilites ... Read More:

I think the title of this review sum up my opinion. The complexity of the storyline was lost in this adaptation. The facts and details that were changed, removed the edge that this novel had originally.

However, God bless Brian Cox who brought talent to the uninspiring cast. His performance alone envoked an emotional reaction out of me.

This dvd contains three Potter plays broadcast in 1980. "Rain on the Roof", "Blade on the Feather" and "Cream in my Coffee".

"Rain" and "Blade" are good but its "Cream" that makes the disc worth getting. It's one of my favourites of Potters work. Prefiguring "The Singing Detective" while being an original work all its own, it has some great performances and is ably directed.

All in all, a brilliant DVD!!!
