Some might describe these movies as what we used to laugh at. I must confess that I still do, and I always will laugh at these wonderful old British films.

Margaret Rutherford is the definitive Miss Marple in my opinion. Later productions (for TV) are watchable and enjoyable, and may be more true to Agatha Christie. Here however, is a compelling strength of character and a thick seam of comedy running right through four flawless performances. Somehow, I can watch them again and again, and still laugh at things like a theatrical gesture, or a piece of dryly comic dialogue.

Praise to Plymouth's own Ron Goodwin for composing that distinctive theme that always brings a smile to my face, because I know what is in store.

There are three most important reasons why you should watch this film, even if it is in black and white and slightly old in style. We would not make films like that any more even for TV, but we could also say that about Hitchcock or Charlie Chaplin. So what! Well, be positive and as I said before there are three main positive reasons for you to watch this film, or any film of that series, because it is a series. First it is Agatha Christie, and Agatha Christie is the most English woman that writes the most English detective stories with the most English "private eye" or "sleuth" no one in no Hollywood or even Bollywood could think of or imagine. Second Miss Marple is the sleuth of the film and that Miss Marple is an old fire-fox at that. She knits when on duty ... Read More:

The fourth one of the series, though I have taken them the wrong way. This is the first one. Margaret Rutherford was still trying her hand at the part and she apparently liked it and even enjoyed it. The murder is obnoxious. The murderer is unforeseen and absolutely vicious. It is pure greed with a good tinge of lust, the lust of the middle-aging man who wants to get some fresh flesh and cool blood, or is it hot actually? The murderer is of course the outsider who is intruding with the life of the people who are soon going to be his competitors, though by his own choice. So he finds it interesting to eliminate a few. But Margaret or is she Jane is or is it are looking after the business and protecting the innocent. The film is thus well done and well acted. But ... Read More:

8 people are invited to a remote mountaintop chalet by their host U.N. Owen; two people are already there as the butler and cook. Once there they find that their mysterious host has accused each of murder and commences to dispatch the guests in the order of a song of Ten Little Indians. Finding that they are cut off from the outside world they must find Mr. Owen and neutralize him before they are all dispatched.

All the clues are present; can you detect whodunit and why?

Pretty well acted version of an Agatha Christie classic. Everyone remembers the standard movie version the was made "And Then There Were None" (1945) with Barry Fitzgerald. Several other attempts were made such as "And Then There Were None" (1974) with Elke Sommer and even ... Read More:

When elderly spinster Jane Marple (played by Margaret Rutherford) attends a meeting of trustees for a training ship for juvenile delinquents, and one of her fellow trustees drops dead under mysterious circumstances, she realizes that it is time for her to investigate.

I must admit that my wife and I chanced across this Miss Marple movie after having become great fans of Joan Hickson's interpretation of the role, and were not too happy with it. Later, however, having accepted that this is not Joan Hickson's Miss Marple, but accepting it for its self, we came to love this movie. Margaret Rutherford brings a real presence to the role, adding a touch of humor, and making the story (not actually written by Agatha Christie, but a good mystery nonetheless) quite entertaining. ... DVD : Miss Marple - Murder At The Gallop [1963]

Margaret Rutherford - the original Miss Marple investigates yet another murder.

'Murder At The Gallop' has a host of stars and includes the usual suspense. Also features her 'lovely' real-life husband (how did she get him?) Stringer Davis, who's agility (particularly on the dance floor) is more than a match for the energetic Rutherford!

A great performance here from Dame Flora Robson, and some humorous moments, including an entertaining scene when Rutherford and her husband do 'The Twist' on the dance floor, and out-do all the young things!

Entertaining stuff!

I remember watching this with my parents and brothers when telly was all in black and white. Margaret Rutherford was a great favourite. The more serious her expression, the funnier. What a treat to find this film is now available on VHS. DVD would be preferable but really, I mustn't grumble because I'm just so delighted to have found it. I've also enjoyed Joan Hickson's Miss Marple -- well, Joan Hickson is another great favourite, but she does a completely different Miss Marple. You'd never believe it was the same character if you didn't know they both played an amateur lady sleuth called Jane Marple, created by Agatha Christie.

This is a three-murder mystery and our heroine is chasing down the trail of clues like a terrier after a bunny. Her trusty assistant, Mr Stringer is a stout hearted ... Read More:
