This collection is one that all those who love gothic style thrillers will enjoy. It features the nineteen seventy six blockbuster, "The Omen" and its progeny.

THE OMEN - ***** STARS

This is the jewel in this collection. It is a first class, gothic thriller with an outstanding cast, a riveting story line, and a musical score that will make the viewer want to sleep with the lights on! A first rate film, it had audiences riveted to the screen when it was first released and has withstood the test of time, as it is as gripping today, as when it was first released.

David Seltzer wrote a terrific screenplay in which an older, affluent, and socially prominent couple, Kathy and Robert Thorn (Lee Remick and Gregory Peck), have ... Read More:

Tucked away in this final set is my favourite Sweeney episode "Hard Men", in which a Scottish detective "liases" with the Met to foil a kidnap plot. An hour of brilliance in the writing and acting department. Nowadays, British drama consists of endless serial killers with preposterous habits and cardboard characters leaning over mortuary tables babbling about forensics in weird colour filters. It's all terribly dreary.

This has to be the best edited box set ever: great restauration work on the originals, bonus stuff that includes new and old interviews, features and whole episodes of other series in which Thaw / Waterman guest stared. Perfect. And of course, The Sweeney is the best cop show ever anywhere in the world.

DVD : Beowulf [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I must admit, I love this film, while acknowledging that it is not a great film. Christopher Lambert has a tendency to pick offbeat roles (such as The Sicillian) but they are quite charming nonetheless. Only about half the movie is really based on the beowulf story, and it has odd modern touches which make it look like "Heavy Metal" magazine (if you remember it). This is obviously shown up on budget and special effects by the 2007 film of the same name, yet for some reason I still like this one. It has a kind of campy gothic theme, think David Lynch's Dune version. Go in with low expectations and you might enjoy it.

For all their faults at least the Omen films form a true trilogy, usually the term just presents a useful marketing exercise so that a surprise blockbuster and its two inferior follow ups can be packaged up in time for Christmas. "Omen III: The Final Conflict" is set 15 years after its predecessor and features our favourite demon forging a successful career in corporate America, whilst greedily eyeing a future role as President. Everything seems to be going swimmingly for Damien until he discovers, somewhat annoyingly, that the second coming is nigh and God's goody-two-shoes son is scheduled to save the world again. There's only one thing for it; kill every new born boy in a Herod-ish effort to quash the holy irritation. Meanwhile a gang of monks are out to kill the devils own ... Read More:

DVD : Omen 3: The Final Conflict [1981] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This, the third Omen film, could have been impressive, but instead languishes in it's own self-importance, having boasted a bigger budget than the previous two Omen films.

It lacks any real drama, and Sam Neill is deeply unconvincing as Damien Thorn. Indeed, the two previous actors who played Damien Thorn brought far more to the role - and one of them was an infant.

The plot is dreary and lacks punch, or the sinister quality that the previous two Omen films were imbued with. The original trailer for the film is very misleading, and portrays 'The Final Conflict' as a dramatic, intense showdown, but in actual fact, all this film consists of is several priests stalking Damien and gradually being picked off in various not very interesting ways.
