Ireally enjoyed "New Tricks", the only complaint is that it was over too soon, I kept looking in the box to see if there were not another disc that I'de skipped over.

Having enjoyed the first series (mostly) I looked forward to watching the second series. Sadly, although the first 3 episodes weren't too bad, from episode 4 onwards it was all downhill.

The characters became predictable and the quality control on the plots disappeared. Sadly I bought the 3rd series with the 2nd. I won't be buying the 4th.

The Mill on the Floss has to be my favourite book, and possibly for this reason I have high expectations of any adaptation. The earlier BBC Sunday teatime version was poor with Mrs Tulliver's sisters more suited to pantomime. In this latest version the humour was lost altogether. Worse still the smartly dressed Mr Tulliver, sounds as though he had had 'the good eddication' he wanted for his son. Add to this the silly opening sequence and I would recommend anyone to wait for an Andrew Davies adaptation. I spoke to him recently on this subject & he indicated an interest.

Its been quite a number of years ago now but I do remember seeing the TV Adaptation of The Sculptress on BBC1.

I think the acting by Pauline Quirke, who played Olive Martin, was quite chilling and showed that she could move away from the role of Sharon she played in Birds of a Feather and other comedic roles she was used to. You were also convinced of Olive's innocence within the film.

But I do look forward to reading the novel version of The Sculptress to make comparisons between the TV Adaptation and the novel quite soon.

The Virgin in the Ice

"Between friends there is no owing."
Once again there is a mystery with many threads overlapping. Father Cadfael uses intuition and a great deal of forensics to sort out what really happened.
You guest it; Sister Hilaria is found in the ice and the last time she was seen was with Brother Oswain of who is delirious from an encounter with bandits. Two kids are missing and a mysterious woodsman (with a sward) is creeping around. Things only get more complicated. In the process of sorting this out Father Cadfael leaves words of wisdom as "There is no shame in tears when they are worth shedding."
The identity of the mysterious woodsman holds great significance.

"The Virgin in the Ice" is by far the most exciting and engrossing of all Ellis Peters' Cadfael Chronicles, with its double twist in the plot and unexpected developments. But to be enjoyed fully it has to be watched after "A Morbid Taste For Bones" which comes at the start of the Chronicles. If "The Virgin in the Ice" is the most engrossing, then "A Morbid Taste For Bones" is definitely the funniest, although with Roman Catholic sensibilities may not entirely agree. "The Devil's Novice" is weaker than the other two tales on thsi disc.

The best thing is to read all the books first, in the correct order, then watch the DVDs for light relief when feeling lazy. The books are much, much, better tham the DVD, but the DVD is still well worth borrowing ... Read More:

When the decision was made to produce for TV several episodes from her mystery series about Brother Cadfael, that 12th century crusader turned monk turned detective who has been, ever since his creation, one of the most compassionate and unusual sleuths of literary history, novelist Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter) was not entirely happy. In fact, as the series' star, Sir Derek Jacobi, explains in the extra footage provided on the now-released DVDs, Ms. Peters had very mixed feelings about giving up her brain child and entrusting it to other people who went about cutting and adjusting everything, from the storylines themselves to the way the protagonists speak and even the Chronicles' sequence, to the necessities and limitations set by the new medium. But she eventually ... Read More:

Back in 1985, the long-running series Dr Who was put on the shelf for a year. So the BBC needed to come up with some new sci-fi series to take its place. The result was the screen adaptation of the trilogy of books called The Tripods, concerning a future Earth which has been invaded by aliens who now watch humanity from their giant three-legged machines. The first segment of the trilogy involved three teenaged boys running away from their home to avoid 'capping' (a form of brainwashing performed on humans to stop any thoughts of rebellion) and finding their way to the mountains where freedom fighters are planning the downfall of the alien masters. If you ever read the excellent Tripods books, you'd think there wasn't enough material for three long TV series. You'd ... Read More:
