Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging [2008]
On a cinema trip with my mates one Saturday we decided to see 'Angus, thongs and perfect snogging'. I hadn't read any of the books but all my friends had and said they were amazing. And it turns out the film was too!

It's incredibly funny and honest and I can't wait to get a copy of the DVD for christmas. Film of the year for me :)

Gurinder Chadha produces a fantastic film with a new twist to the classical conundrum: how does an independent minded female connect with the opposite sex? Jane Austen could never in her wildest dreams imagine the outstanding Bollywood like dance and music numbers which make this film such a delightful viewing experience. Ashanti does a magical song and dance called "Take Me to Love." The Bakshi sisters sing and express appropriate sentiment in "No Life without Wife" which is a delightful song mocking the awkward attempts by Mr. Kholi, an accountant of Indian background who lives near Hollywood, who returned to Amritsar, India to find himself a wife. Despite his obvious material successes in the USA, which he keeps pointing out to the Bakshi family, ... Read More:

I'd been after this film for some time, and was pleased to be able to pick it up cheaply at the supermarket earlier this week. I was somewhat surprised when my mother (not, as far as I know, a fan of the cross-cultural sporting coming-of-age genre) said that she wanted to watch it last night. It turns out that someone had told her that it had been made around where we grew up in West London (Hayes, Southall, Hounslow, Heathrow - how those names mix memory and desire). Neither of us were disappointed - it's an excellent comedy, with some deft touches.

The story isn't perhaps the most original creation, but the merit of the acting is that it has you caring about what happens to the characters. Parminder Nagra is particularly good, although ... Read More:

DVD : Bhaji On The Beach [1994]
I fell in love with Bhaji on the Beach when it was shown on the TV over 10 years ago, so purchasing it on DVD was a wise investment since I will watch it over and over again.

Directed by the same person who brought us Bend It Like Beckham, Bhaji on the Beach is this lady's most under-rated achievement and by far, her best work to date. Even on a low budget, the film captures such thought provoking issues which are still prevalent today, but it's also humourous and will appeal to all ages and cultures. You'll recognise some familiar faces who have gone to work on bigger movies since, namely Hugo Speer (Full Monty, etc)

It's also amusing to watch scenes where the actors are relying on pay-phones to communicate (can you imagine ... Read More:

DVD : What's Cooking? [2001] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
After reaching adulthood, a family Thanksgiving celebration became problematic as I don't consider turkey (or the ham alternative) a festive dish. I'm not hard pressed to think of a better way to spend my time - such as going out for a burger and a movie. WHAT'S COOKING only reinforces my curmudgeonly attitude, but also left me with a smile.

This film has a cast of thousands. Let's just say that it involves four American families of varied background - Jewish, Black, Vietnamese, Mexican Latino - gathering for the Turkey Day ritual. Each has a festering dysfunction.

Ruth and Herb Seelig (Lainie Kazan and Maury Chaykin) welcome their daughter Rachel (Kyra Sedgwick) home for the holiday. Rachel brings her lesbian lover Carla (Julianna Margulies), much to Mom and Dad's ... Read More:
