There is nothing I can add to the reviews for each of the individual films which rate as classics in the war film genre. I'm of that generation that can remember it being a really big event especially at Christmas when the Great Escape was on the telly and like many people can remember it scene by scene but still feel its better than most modern films relying on computer generated effects. Myself an ex RAF man its always thrilling to see the aerial scenes of the Battle of Britain made ironically with the help of the then fascist Spanish air force who where still flying Heinkels, Dorniers and Meschershmits a left over from Franco's friendship with Hitler. A bridge too far made in 1977 came later but is true to Corneleus Ryans book being historically ... Read More:

Collecting the six `official' movies featuring Bond number one, Sean Connery:

Dr No: James Bond's cinematic debut is an exotic mystery with a few classic moments along the way; Sean Connery's introduction and the shot of Ursula Andress walking out of the sea have passed into cinematic legend, whilst the film itself is an involving adventure, and a close adaptation of the original novel. Joseph Wiseman's Dr No is a fine villain, and Jack Lord's Felix Leiter was never bettered either.

From Russia With Love: Simply put, the finest of the Bond series; this movie provided the benchmark by which all future Bond films would be judged. A well-plotted cold war thriller, it features career-best performances from Connery and Pedro Armendariz, ... Read More:

If you're after saving some space on the shelf and a little bit of cash over buying the individual releases then this is what you want. The packaging is a competent fold out digipack style. The films themselves look excellent in High Def. Some people say there's not much improvement over the recent UEs. However the extra detail is apparent, of course it is. There's only so much upscaling DVDs can get you. The set is encoded for regions A,B,C.

DVD : Battle of Britain - Definitive Edition [1969]
This film is a winner on three counts. It brings together most of the best actors of a generation, it uses the real aircraft which took part and it was overseen from a historical perspective by pilots who flew in the battle, (Stanford Tuck, Douglas Bader and Adolph Galland amongst them).
It tells the story of the summer of 1940 with peerless aerial photography (no naff pearl habor CGI) and superbly well staged ground action such as the London Blitz and the airfield attack. I found all of the central characters thoroughly believable with the performances of Sir Larry as 'Stuffy' Dowding and Robert Shaw's Squadron leader being outstanding. This is a film I can drag out and watch every 18 months or so and it never fails to enthrall and move me. There should have ... Read More:

DVD : James Bond - Goldfinger (Ultimate Edition 2 Disc Set) [1964]
Appropriately enough the first of the series to have a really imaginative use of colour, Goldfinger is in many ways the most visually sensual of the films, the unforgettable image of Shirley Eaton's golden girl reflected in a golden glow to much of Ted Moore's cinematography. It's oozing with striking and surreal imagery, from Oddjob's menacing shadow on the hotel room wall, to the little old lady with machine gun or Bond making his entry by unzipping his wetsuit to reveal an evening one underneath. Ken Adam's production design is his possibly his finest hour, genuine architecture of the imagination that is at once both fantastic and strangely credible, maintaining a sense of scale and verisimilitude by his use of ceilings on the smaller sets.

It's also the one ... Read More:

Collecting the seven movies featuring `official' Bond number three, Roger Moore:

Live And Let Die: Roger Moore's debut in the role of James Bond is a pleasingly dated blaxploitation pastiche, which, though it has not aged well, still endures as an oddball 1970s' crime thriller. Yaphet Kotto's villain is well-played, Jane Seymour is gorgeous as Solitaire, and the alligator farm sequence and resulting speedboat chase are two of the series' most famous scenes. Also, Paul McCartney's theme song is possibly the series' all time best.

The Man With The Golden Gun: Moore's second film in the series is possibly the series all-time worst; like Diamonds Are Forever, it forsakes plot logic and any attempts at realism for low-brow comedy, daft homage to other movies ... Read More:

late summer, 1973: 'CUBBY' BROCCOLLI dines eloquently in London's WEST END, enjoying an exquisite menu; in his full-dinner jacket tuxedo, he resembles a LATINO, aging BOND. CUBBY is satisfied as he tots up the worldwide box-office reciepts to 'LIVE AND LET DIE'; it has been a deserved hit with global cinema audiences, and 'CUBBERS' [along with 'partner-in-crime' HARRY SALTZMAN] have successfully steered the once-ailing BOND series back to world-beating status, securing further cinematic mayhem in the same profitable mould.......

------it's a total mystery, then, exactly why BROCCERS and SALTZMAN made a concious decision to scale back the epic scope of the previous winner, and to pare back production values in this next, more modestly-mounted entry. Gone are the extended, exhillerating ... Read More:

DVD : James Bond - Diamonds Are Forever (Ultimate Edition 2 Disc Set) [1971]
Diamonds Are Forever saw the welcome return of Sean Connery as 007. This was his 6th and final (official) outing in the role. Based on some elements of the original Ian Fleming novel, Bond follows a diamond smuggling 'pipeline' and goes from Amsterdam to Las Vegas, and then on to the finale on an oil rig off the coast of Southern California.

The film is rather offbeat in nature compared to more 'serious' spy stories such as 'From Russia With Love'. Still, Diamonds Are Forever, as well as having a great title song, has its classic moments, such as: the fight in the Amsterdam lift with Peter Franks, the crematorium scene, Bambi and Thumper, moutaineering up a Vegas hotel, the moon buggy chase and, of course, the leftfield (but sinisterly effective) bad guys in Mr. Kydd and Mr. Wint.
