'Being There' is a film Peter Sellers made right at the end of his career. Whatever you make of this troubled man's life, I think you will agree that the role he plays here, of Chance the gardener, represents a brave exit from the glitzy world of movies. Indeed, Being There could be seen as a satire on the celebrity industry of which Peter Sellers was so much a part.

Chance is a man who has never grown up. Employed for the whole of his existence by a rich man in Washington who has just died, Chance's life has been dominated by gardening, television and little else. His employer's huge house, a home that Chance has never left for a moment, is being sold, and Chance finds himself out on the street, and hopelessly ill-equipped for ... Read More:

This Jack Nicholson road movie made when he was pretty much still typecast as the anti hero drifter rebel type he played so convincingly, is choc full of those Kerouac type one liners he loved. A crackling screenplay with some good scenes gives the man real opportunities to do his party pieces, as well as show a real gift for world worn cynicism. His acting is just so natural, yet very, very powerful. Has there ever been another movie actor like him, I ask.

I'm slowly making my way through Hal Ashby's filmography, shaking my head and wondering what could have been if this genius had lived a little longer. This film is based on the protest singer Woody Guthrie's autobiography. It shows his life in middle America before he was known, his struggle to reach California, his early musical career, his support of the workers and the unions (a commie bastard in many people's eyes.) Some scenes of migrant workers arriving in California, and the treatment they received, are very reminiscent of the arrival of jews at concentration camps. Scenes of Woody playing music with his friends, of young women strumming their guitars in the migrant worker camps, catch the viewer by surprise with their simple beauty. Ashby told stories that ... This is my favourite film of all time and I'd recommend it to anyone. Life affirming, poignant, moving - altogether fabulous. I've just bought this dvd to replace the video version which I no longer have the technology to play. There's no way I could be without a copy of this film, it makes the greyest day a little brighter.

The Stones have earned their mantle for being real musicians. They can be rightly be called as legends having been responsible for Beggars banquet, Let it bleed, Sticky fingers and Exile on main street which are Classic albums essential for anybody who is into Rock music.

While they have produced serious stuff, they have never taken themselves seriously, they are a fun band and out to entertain. As, at the time this was filmed, they were nearing middle age, they were not out to shock to appeal to the teenyboppers, they were out to be as outrageous as possible and wallow in the 'debauched rock and roll lifestyle'.

IMHO, this is a perfect example of it.

Sure Jagger can't sing and the guitars sounded out of tune but that was not what ... Read More:

This was a five star film when I was twenty, and genuinely cried at the end feeling my hero had a hard time of it and wern't women cruel and wasn't that the best party ever...now I saw it, laughed a bit, once, and found it horribly dated...but dear viewer, if you are twenty, and sexually inexperienced, you'l probably think it is brilliant..like the Doors really, and there is nothing wrong with that, I just dread watching the Hair film by milos forman again, to find it's lustre gone(do I dare?)
