My second best Hartley's film. A bit more professional in the making than the Unbelievable Truth, though maybe it lacks the immense freshness of the Hartley's very first film. Hence the 4 stars, not 5.
Anyway, really worth it, nothing to do with his pseudo-sophisticated and boring later films like Amateur.
When does it come out on DVD? (Hint!)

An early film of Hal Hartley, this is less slick in production but much more inventive, fresh and lively than some of his later movies. All of the subtle human observations of directors like Bill Forsyth are present, as is a nice low key attitude of direction and of the acting. Despite a few strangely surreal comedic set pieces, the characters are all just about believable as the population of 'hicksville'. Robert Burke has just the right weight for the part and plays it gently but with conviction. Sadly this movie is not available in the UK on DVD and even DVD copies in NTSC (American) format are becoming quite rare in the US. Let's hope the publishers find out there's a market over here for the work.

One tries not to throw the word brilliant around too often, as doing so robs the word of any meaning, so I am quite sincere when I bestow the word brilliant on this remarkable film - after all, what is artistic brilliance if not the ability to call forth beauty from the midst of ugliness? This story takes place against a depressing backdrop of poverty, desperation, and dysfunction. Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) works as a garbage man, endures physical attacks on the streets, and comes home each night to a thoroughly dysfunctional family. His mother is obviously depressed and, at times, nonresponsive, while his sister Faye (Parker Posey) is irresponsible and only interested in fulfilling her own [...] needs as often as possible. Simon himself seems ... Read More:

DVD : Amateur [1995]
Having just seen 'In Bruges' I was reminded of this film I saw over fifteen years ago. It has a European feel to it, even though it is set in New York (I think ?). It has hit men, and is a very dark quirky film with hilarious moments in it. It also has the same kind of ending.

it just wish it would become available on region 2 as i've not seen it for so many years.

DVD : Flirt [1997]
Admittedly Hal Hartley is at his most experimental and self-indulging here but the film is still an absolute joy in his typical deadpan and drole look at personalities and relationships. Not one for you if you only like mainstream films but if you like the style and humour in Amateur and The Unbelievable Truth then this takes it one level further. The director describes the film as "light" which is just as it should be taken for maximum enjoyment - a playful look at the same story played out three different ways, for fun. In fact it's exactly as the title suggests - a flirt with storytelling. This is my favourite Hal Hartley film just because it's so unique.

DVD : Three Shorts By Hal Hartley [1989]
The first of these shorts 'Surviving Desire' (which is considerably longer than the other two) is arguably Hartley's most perfectly realised film and most rewarding. Donovan is brilliant as the melancholic English professor caught between existential crisis and carnal desire, while the supporting cast are also superb. As with his other works formal story is merely a prop to support the characters and their beautifully mannered speech. Questions of love, faith and the burden of possessing abstract knowledge in the face of mundane, daily life are all explored with wit, humanity and a hip sensibilty. Woody Allen for the rock and roll generation. Don't hesitate - buy it.
