By now you will have read that this is one of the most fantastic animations of all time.

However, may I suggest that you do your utmost to purchase the original Japanese version and watch it with subtitles, rather than with the silly dubbed American voices.

It takes on a whole new character watching it in the original Japanese.

This anime classic explores the familiar ecological theme often found in such Ghibli works as Princess Mononoke.

This an engaging film which might not appeal to younger audiences due to the complex story, and the giant scary insects (which again are reminiscent of the giant forest spirits in Princess Mononoke).

In a world of warring civilisations clinging on to the few natural resources available due to the years of constant pollution, a plan to resurrect an ancient force and change the world results in a battle to protect the future of the planet. This is a pretty involved story and isn't one to be casually watched whilst doing the housework or checking your e-mails. The main characters are strong and as with most of Miyazaki's ... Read More:

This is another Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece. As with his other films, the strength is in the story and the storytelling. Even though this supposed to be a children film, it has a strong appeal to adults, with the intrigue of the power play between the characters and people are not what they first appear. There is the additional puzzle if you want to work out who's providing the voice for the villain, it's Mark Hamill. Always wondered what he did after playing Luke Skywalker! The only downside and why it might not appeal to some is that the animation is a bit dated, it doesn't have the bright pizzazz of some of the more modern Pixar, Disney or Dreamwork animation, but well worth taking the time to watch.

The action of Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated fantasy takes place in an undetermined place and age, though it looks like the late 19th century (allowing for a number of anachronistic details) in a Central European kingdom (the Austro Hungarian empire of the time seems the country where the action takes place, and the book happens in a place called Ingary, though the kingdom in the movie has a large port by the sea, which the Austro Hungarian empire didn't). The story starts with a young woman called Sophie working in a hat factory who is suddenly turned into a 90 year woman through a curse by some witch. She then tries to meet the wizard Howl, to see if he can help her. As it later turns out, Howl faces some curses of its own. The story soon becomes very convoluted, almost ... Read More:

First of all the film is excellent Ive seen it before which made me purchase the DVD - BUT - I got the DVD in the post and didnt watch it for a while, opened it up - the disk says spirited away but the film on the disk is actually an old EMI film called 'Bad Boys'! Weird.

Hayao Miyazaki animated feature of a 13-old year witch leaving his parents and settling in a new town to form a (broom-based) delivery service is irresistible. As in many of his movies, the protagonist here is a plucky heroine defying all odds. What I found most enjoyable about the movie - though - is its background details. Miyazaki loves European culture - and the movie is set in never land Europe - a fantasy Europe that never existed. A lot of the clothes and the technology suggests the 1950s and the 1960s - but filtered through Miyazaki's sensibility (there are a number of anachronistic details that suggest perhaps a mid-20th century Europe if World War II had never happened). Miyazaki uses a lot of different sources in his movies - and they not always coalesce. In Porco Rosso, they ... Read More:

My 7 & 10 year olds love this and watch it lots. I was pleasantly surprised as it is not the usual box office, Disney wonder. I first heard of it when Jonathon Ross raved about it. He was right - the animation is great and the story is quite interesting (to me) and fascinating (to my children). Nice to see eastern cartoons that are not just kungfu rubbish, but are well thought-out.

Probably my favourite Miyazaki film (for now!). The superb animation combined with a rather melancholic tone link it quite firmly with its more famous descendent "Spirited Away". However this film is more whimsical and has some great set pieces that inject a lot of energy. The backdrop of romantic 1930s adventure, the threat of Italian fascism and the trauma of war all underlie, as usual, an apparently mere 'cartoon' or children's tale.

I think the other reviews here do justice in saying how good this film is, so I won't focus on praising the film. However, I would like to inform you about this version of the film. For the average person looking to buy this dvd, this information may not be that useful but for an fan it may be relevant.

So....

There are other editions of this film including streamline and manga editions.

This is the Optimum Asia release. This Optimum re-release marks a general improvement over the previous Manga edition. Whereas that version came without anamorphic enhancement and was essentially lacklustre in the visual department, here we find a fine clarity, superb colours and anamorphic transfer. That said, we also arrive at an NTSC-PAL conversation which results in some ... Read More:
