Here's a reason to turn your back on modern hollywood schlock dross and return to a time when intelligence, story, acting and sheer craftmanship actually meant something.
A beautifully worked story, setting us up in a boy's boarding school and the twisted relationship between a headmaster, his wife, and his mistress. By the time the two women get together and decide to rid themselves of him they have our total sympathy. But a simple plan soon unravels when the body disappears....
Engrossing to the very end, this film is a classic of old-school horror - building dread upon dread, and bringing everything together into a startling finale. It deserves its reputation in the pantheon of great movies.

The Wages of Fear is a magnificent thriller, the last hour-and-a-half of which will have you chewing your nails up to your wrists. The first hour is interesting but, to my mind, a bit slow. We spend a lot of time getting to know the squalor of Las Piedras. The anti-American point of view now just seems quaint.

Las Piedras is a tiny South American (or possibly Central American) town that reeks of poverty and bakes in the hot sun. Children with sores, tired donkeys and mangy dogs fill the dirt streets. It's the final stop for down-and-outers whose only hope is to find work with the Southern Oil Company (you can infer SOC easily is a stand-in for Standard Oil), which dominates the place. "Americans here? You kidding?" says one man. "If ... Read More:

Le Corbeau aka The Raven is a surprisingly vivid piece of film-making, a wonderfully cinematic dissection of a town torn apart by the poison-pen letters of 'The Raven.' The initial balance of power that maintains the status quo (A knows B's indiscretion, B knows A's, so neither can destroy the other without disgracing himself) is soon destroyed as the whole town learns each other's dirty linen, with suspicions, half-truths and outright lies soon lead to the town turning on each other in the search for a scapegoat. Tragedy, suicide and murder inevitably follow...

This, of course, was the film that earned Clouzot a lasting reputation as a collaborator - made for the infamous German Continental films, it was attacked by both the Nazis for ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite foreign language films. A true masterpiece of suspense, nerve-jangling tension, excitement with a cool French existentialist philosophy underpinning it all. The Wages of Fear would certainly be a contender in my Top Ten films ever made.

BUT, please don't waste your money on this DVD of the film. The print that was used is in a shocking condition. It is dirty, out of focus, creaky, and the subtitles are so faint they are barely readable. I think it was a disgrace to release a DVD in this condition at all. Without doubt it is worse than VHS, in fact the copy I have, taped off the TV about ten years ago is MUCH better even now. I had hoped to replace it with a sharp DVD edition, but this was a complete waste of money.

Other reviewers have described the twists and turns that make this probably the best French film noir of all time, and on a par with "Psycho". The first time you see it it is really scary and startling: more so in fact than some outright horror movies. The next few times you are still enjoying its sheer class and puzzling over the final scenes.

It is said Hitchcock tried to buy the rights to the novel but was pipped at the post by Clouzot. Certainly the great H. couldn't have done a better job; a Hollywood-type version would have flopped: this is so French a story. Realistic acting, tense, brooding atmosphere in a strange French boarding school full of weird Gallic characters and attention to minute detail all add to the sense of mystery.

This is an example of what happens when the ego of the director gets in the way of the art. A simple basic rule of filming singers is that the camera stays on the singer all the time they are singing. On this dvd Henri-Georges Clouzot constantly moves the camera off the singers half-way through the phrase. It's distracting and makes it impossible to focus properly on the music. Given that in this instance the singers include at least two of the greatest of the great, it's not merely irritating - it's insulting.

sometimes when you hear about "cult" film they are a real dissapointment. well, this is the business.
heard about it and had to see it. well worth the effort tracking it down and if you are looking for something slightly different and dark. then this is it.

Enjoyable but....

It does not perhaps seem surprising that this film, despite being the work of one the most renowned of French directors and benefiting from quality performances from a number of big name actors, seems to have passed into relative obscurity. One of the principal factors contributing to this is likely the fact that in a single viewing at least (i.e. the originally available cinematic experience prior to video/DVD) the scenario and intentions of the film are largely perplexing. Essentially the film seems to be suffering from an identity crisis or a daring attempt to mix two disparate, largely incompatible genres that does not quite come off. The opening scene allows that a more or less conventional Cold-War espionage drama unfold , however things then quickly develop ... Read More:
