What a fantastic print we now have of this film since the original cinerama has now been restored and the three joins of the original can no longer be seen. Finally the film can be seen in glorious depth and colour with both images in the foreground and background in crystal clarity.

A fantastic commentary is also added by filmmaker David Strohmaier, Director of Cinerama, Inc. John Sitting, Film Historian Rudy Behlemer, Music Historian Jon Burlingame and Stuntman Loren James which throws so much new light on the making of the movie.

For those who have never seen the film; sit back and enjoy.

For those who have seen the film many times on TV or video, and longed for the day.....welcome for the first time ... Read More:

James Mason gives two very different impersonations of Rommel, every Brit's favorite Nazi general, in The Desert Fox and The Desert Rats. The former is a solid biopic more concerned with his involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler than his exploits in Africa, painting him as an honorable man unable to believe just how insane Hitler is until it is too late, while the latter is a standard war movie set against the siege of Tobruk slightly elevated by Robert Wise's direction but which still manages to feel overlong at an hour and a half. Richard Burton and Robert Newton are the top-liners, but Mason turns up for an extended cameo as a dastardly Nazi swine of the "Die, Englander pigdog" comic strip variety.

'How the West was Won' was the forerunner of widescreen cinema and was originally shot as a cinerama (curved screen) movie. Warner have made an excellent job of creating a widescreen letterbox transfer (without the three-panel vertical line joins) of this classic western from 1963 which features a myriad of screen giants such as Gregory Peck, Carrol Baker, James Stewart, Lee J Cobb, Karl Malden, John Wayne, George Peppard, Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark and Debbie Reynolds, amongst others. Like the more recent 'Deadwood', this movie was the work of more than one director (Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall in this case) and is essentially split into three historical periods whilst also following the fate of one particular family from beginning ... Two great actors wasted on an over-long film. The Western is built on clichés but skilfully handled they can create a masterpiece. This film shows up all the clichés of the Western for what they are. But it's worth watching for John Wayne's performance even if you're not one of his fans.

This is an excellent western and a marvelous exposé of the bigotry of an era when many regarded Indians with the same contempt that unborn babies are seen today. To kill one, even as brutally and violently as Max Sand/Steve McQueen's mother's dies, is to do nothing wrong. As the son of an Indian mother and a white father, McQueen bridges the gap between the less-than-human Indian and the fully human white, when he seeks revenge for his mother and father's slaying.

Because Max has been reared in the wilderness, at the beginning of this film he's a blank slate, understanding nothing about either violence or the evil that violence can do to a man's soul, even when undertaken to revenge a wrong. Through most of the film, he uses and discards good people in the pursuit ... Read More:

The main problem most people have with this film is that far too many scenes are taken from 1967's Tobruk and to be honest I agree with them. Also, we don't really find out much about most of the soldiers and therefore don't sympathise as much when they bite the dust. It's also very difficult to tell who dies and who doesn't.
However, this film does have several saving graces in my opinion. First of all, this film has several sub-plots that differ from Tobruk, so I wouldn't really call it a rip-off. The film also is quite suspenseful in places. The great Richard Burton also stars, giving the film a commanding feel and finally, having viewed and enjoyed Tobruk, I am delighted to view the great action sequences on DVD, as only Raid On Rommel is available on this format.
