Much is made of the factual inaccuracies of this story. In fact if you have the good fortune to read the excellent book JOLIE -THE STORY OF AL JOLSEN by Michael Freedland, the truth is not as far away as you may think. First of all the man had to have an ego do what he was doing, cope with the fame and up to a point survive. He had certain character traits that others had, a temper, meanness followed by generosity and so on that were minimised and ignored for the most part by the film. You can only tell so much of a story and maintain the interest of the watcher. Personalities devolve in to composite characters and so on. Like for most mature vocalists, the music has to be several steps lower as the range changes with age. As with Sinatra and ... Read More:

A Professor (James Mason) is given a piece of lava for a present. It proves to be too heavy for the type of lava. Upon examination there is a message inside that will eventually take this professor through many adverse adventures eventually leading to a "Journey to the Center of the Earth"

I usually side with the book. However this time it is the movie that I will hold as the standard. This is better than all the subsequent attempts to re-interpret the story. They picked just the right people for the parts. Pat Boone as Alec McEwen, "Goodbye Charlie" (1964), James Mason as Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, and Arlene Dahl as Mrs. Carla Goetaborg. And Thayer David was the sinister Count Saknussmen. Many of the location scenes were at Carlsbad ... Read More:

Dean Martin beautifully hams it up as a "James Bond" take off. Like Flint and the Men From Uncle, this is from the golden age of spoof agents, where the locations were generally bright, sunny and warm and the women were stunning.

This is great if you just want to relax and not take anything serious. A great stress buster!

Kick your shoes off, get comfy and just enjoy.

I first saw this movie more than 40 years ago and it remains one of my favourites. A good old fashioned adventure movie to while sunday afternoons away. Adapted from a famous Jules Verne Novel, it does remain fairly close to the original book. A party of explorers set off to reach the earth's centre and experience some remarkable adventures on the way; an underground ocean; a giant mushroom forest; Atlantis; and an exploding volcano, and oh of course, various monsters! Some good set pieces and effects bearing in mind that this movie is more than 40 years old. Great for the kids, although the younger ones might be frightened of the monsters the explorers come across from time to time. James Mason, a distinguished actor of his time is aided by the lovely Arhlene ... Read More:

It's Spring Break, and four man-hungry coeds leave the Midwest snow behind and drive to Ft. Lauderdale for fun in the sun. Brainy Merritt (Dolores Hart) falls hard for Ivy Leaguer, Ryder (George Hamilton), while Tuggle and TV (Paula Prentiss and Jim Hutton) pair up for laughs. Singer Angie has eyes for musician Basil (Connie Francis, Frank Gorshin) and sweet Melanie (Yvette Mimieux) just wants to date a real Yalie.

Has it really been 45 years since "WTBA" was first released? It must be true, but just hearing the opening notes of the theme song, sung so earnestly by Connie Francis, brings back 1960 in all its glory...when girls went to college to find a husband, college boys were still called "boys," and Spring Break was so new that there was nary a ... DVD : Journey to the Center of the Earth [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Collectively, Verne's novels were called "Les voyages extraordinaires", and this film, whatever licenses have been taken with the source, aspires to that. While the prelude to the journey is too long (we even have to endure Pat Boone croon a tuneless number), once we've plunged into the Earth, the film takes on an air of wonderment.

Cast chemistry contributes in a big way. James Mason, a brooding but stout leader. Pat Boone, surprisingly effective as an eager student (but not so successful as a Scotsman). Arlene Dahl, a ravishingly beautiful damsel who is sage and sane and only distressed when she really really needs to be. Real-life Icelander Peter Ronson, a tall man's man -- who loves his pet duck. Gravelly-voiced American Thayer David, pure villainy. ... Read More:
