This DVD gave me very first chance to observe Rubinstein's performance in colour and to see technical aspect of his playing. Even in most difficult passages in the concertos, his fingers hardly move, his head slightly up in contemplative poise. Nothing flamboyant, yet astonishingly rich and electrifying tones radiating from this frail and calm figure.

Grieg Concerto is a relaxed affair, lacking the intensity and verve this work requires, but Chopin and Saint-Saens Concertos are no doubt great performances as the pianist plays as if he was in his 20s! Slow movement of Chopin Concerto as sublime as the famous 70s' recording with Ormandy.

Pictures have nostalgic 70s' feel and nicely presented. Young Previn providing strong ... Read More:

Following their release of Artur Rubinstein's Grieg, Chopin and Saint-Saëns concertos, Deutsche Grammophon issues another fascinating programme about the great pianist, recorded two years earlier, in August 1973, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Rubinstein can be heard and seen in Beethoven's 3rd and Brahms's 1st, both accompanied by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Bernard Haitink.

Produced by the same team, with Hugo Käch directing, the great Max Wilcox who had been recording Rubinstein since 1959 as audio producer, and Robert Hofer responsible for the photography, this DVD provides further insight in the artistry of one of the most significant pianists of the previous century in the indian summer ("autumn" would be too strong ... Despite not being technically among the best DVDs, this is just about my favourite DVD. Superb production and performance - I much prefer the performance to the recent CD (Keene, NYC Opera). The work is so touching and inspiring, and the quite weird, slow moving settings are magnetic and mesmerising. I return again and again to hear it - the opening, the "boer" chorus, the "light" but transcendental ending. It would be good to have a high quality, full featured DVD of this work, but it had better be of as wonderful a performance and production.

I've been a fan of the Juilliard String Quartet for more than forty years and have heard the live performances of all the Beethoven Quartets, one of the highlights of my concertgoing career. I have heard the group in several of its iterations, going back to when Isadore Cohen, Raphael Hillyer and Claus Adam were its second violinist, violist and cellist. The make-up of the Quartet on this DVD recorded in 1975 is their original first violinist, Robert Mann, second violinist Earl Carlyss, violist Samuel Rhodes, and cellist Joel Krosnick. Krosnick had joined the group only a year earlier but he is clearly completely assimilated. This is probably the make-up that most middle-age and older music-lovers know best. Today only Rhodes and Krosnick remain in the ... Read More:

DVD : Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier -- Vienna/Von Karajan [1984]
This is largely the cast of Karajan's second audio recording whcih almost but does not quite eclipse his classic 50's set with Schwarzkopf.
I played this through a Sony DAVS500 on a normal TV and was absorbed from start to finish. The picture quality is good but some of the whole stage shots lack the last bit of detail that a later film would have given. The stage production is traditional and lavish, and the film production picks up details nicely. The sound quality on the Dolby Digital stereo option is very good but the non surround option is weaker.

If you value the quality of performance and value for money above sound and picture (both of which are better than adequate but not state of the art) then you can't go wrong at £15/16 - buy ... Read More:

DVD : Turandot At The Forbidden City Of Beijing
I have seen several performances of Puccini's Turandot and this is by far my favorite. The costumeing is out of this world. The 700 outfits was hand embroidered in Shanghai.

The singing is great and the orchestra is top class. Sergeij Larin (Kalaf) has a perfect voice. He never misses a note. Barbara Frittoli is a fantastic Liu. She has the most beautiful female voice in the whole Opera. Giovanna Casolla is an OK Turandot.

Over all I was very impressed by this production. Its a must for all Puccini lovers. If you are able, buy the DVD of this,do. It gives background on Puccin's life and the making Turandot.
