This is the opera that shot Georgiu to stardom. It's easy to see why, with her combination of acting, looks and singing. Violetta is a very difficult role, it places very different demands on the singer in each act. Georgiu isn't quite ideal for act 1, but after that she's really in her element. You can practically see the paternal pride in Solti's face as he watches his young protegee bloom. Surely the definitive Traviata.

Johan Strauss II didn't get his reputation as Vienna's Waltz King for sitting around eating strudel mit shlag. He wrote glorious melodies...waltzes, polkas, mazurkas...that set people to dancing and smiling. His music still does.

Die Fledermaus is a Viennese fable of lechery, love, revenge and romance, of beautiful wives, juicy maids, amorous husbands, clever friends, a mysterious count and a drunken jailer, of white tie and tails, beautiful gowns, a gold watch and lots of champagne. Most of all, it is a light-hearted and mischievous story that features some of Strauss' most romantic and bubbling music which just washes over the audience. The story is too comically complicated to go into. Just remember that it's all about a bit of ... Read More:

Beautifully sung, very well-acted, superbly directed. You can't go wrong with this recording. Robert Lloyd sings brilliantly and the Tarkovsky direction is of a very high standard. If you love Russian opera, if you just love opera and pageantry, this is a marvellous performance and a very enjoyable entertainment.

It is a wonderful performance, much much more impressive then the austere Munich performance on the Farrao Classics DVD. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment plays brilliantly for William Christie.

Anna Caterina Antonacci is a glamorously beautiful woman with a hell of a stage charisma. Andreas Scholl is outstanding and fulfils his status as one of the two greatest countertenors today (the other one is of course David Daniels). His two arias in the beginning of the second act, when he meets his sister Eduige dressed like a blind vagabond is breathtaking! And as Grimoaldo, tenor Kurt Streit is outstanding too.

This is for my taste a glorious DVD that no Handel fan should miss!

What chemistry these two have on stage. I just cant stop watching them! Domingo is in fine voice as is Te Kanawa. Act 4 is a joy to behold, has me in tears all the time. This definitely wins over the Met production which to me is overacted. I love scotto as a singer(beautiful to listen to) but her acting leaves a lot to be desired. I found myself cringing! Domingo overacts as well here. Domingo really feeds off his partners and here is a perfect example.

Wheras in the Covent Garden production both actors are perfectly comfortable with each other. The acting is superb leaving the singing to convey in glorious tones much of the emotion. Beautiful. The things that domingo can do with his voice are amazing when he is in this sort of form and te ... Read More:
