`Pom Poko' was one of those Studio Ghibli films I decided to leave to last in my purchase of the entire collection on DVD, mainly due to the majority of reviews here on Amazon, which generally consist of less enthusiastic comments in comparison to other more commercially succesful features released by this renowned Japanese studio. But having finally watched the film for myself I'm even more surprised by the uncomplimentary reviews, because in both style and story I found `Pom Poko' to be absolutely flawless.

The film has magic galore and an original ecological morality tale at its heart, which is in the same vein as `Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind' and `Princess Mononoke' with their man versus nature overtones, but `Pom Poko' is ... Read More:

After seeing the 'ghosts' at the beginning of the film, you assume that effectively knowing the end is going to spoil it in some way - but it doesn't. The film fills in the gaps and brings the very human story of two siblings fighting for survival during the Second World War in Japan.

This isn't a film for very young children as the message would probably get lost, and some of the imagery might be a bit distressing - it's meant to be. This is a film with a simple story, but dealing with complex relationships and politics. You long for young Seita and his sister Setsuko to triumph in a situation beyond desperate, and though many of the scenes are very emotional - it doesn't stop them from being tremendously beautiful.

I didn't think this film would be very good a first glance, despite this i still bought this film; and i'm so glad it did. The film had all the realism of a live -action drama and you could really feel for the main character and in some ways relate to how her past family life was and how we all reminisce to our childhood memories. It is a treat to watch. Recommend for all ghibli fans.

It's brilliant. One of the best creations of Studio Ghibli. In my list, it's right up there with "Spirited Away". I laughed out loud! And not many things can make me do that. At the moment, just the book "Bad Science".

"The Yamadas" is realistic, psychologically accurate, funny, human, and, obviously Japanese! Packed with bonzai trees and Basho's haikus. Oh...

Who said that animation must be elaborated? In "The Yamadas" it's schematic, but you know what, it is just enough for what it is trying to say. Perfect. Like tea ceremony - nothing excessive.

It is about family and perhaps is more accessible to those actually already burdened (or blessed?) with it.

This is a beautiful film, aching with sadness, beauty and love.

It's the saddest films I've ever seen - it was so sad that, when I watched Love Story two days after I found myself deeply admiring it but dry-eyed, having cried myself out over Grave of the Fireflies. The only film I've seen that allows so much breathing/grieving time is Japanese Story.

The best film review I've ever read describes this film perfectly: (paraphrasing) "It's about the endless capacity of the human spirit...to love." Indeed, it's as much a love story, albeit family love rather than romantic, as it is a war story or a tragedy. Why a tragedy? Because at the end of the day, it's Seita's fault, holding back their savings until too late and for leaving their aunt's ... Read More:

I had high hopes for this title, but i found myself becoming bored half way through. Despite this i carried on watching till the end, this was a mistake as it just got worse. I gave it two stars as the begining was quite good, and it was prob good for its time, but in all, not worth watching. Wouldn't recommend.

After watching Castle of Cagliostro I really needed another fix of Lupin. Unfortunatelty this did not live up to my expectations. Okay the animation is slicker, but the plot didn't follow suit. I overlooked the fact that the DVD was dubbed only which perhaps put me off before I even watched it. But my instincts were right because this has the most awful dubbing ever! The majority of the voices are incredibly irritating, especially the mock English accent that keeps cropping up. All in all a charmless piece of tat.
