This is my favourite adaptation of a Forster novel and it has thankfully been re-released as a proper widescreen version which fills the full screen of my TV. (The original DVD was a failed experiment in adaptation resulting in a shrunken picture in which very little was visible whatever TV shape you were using). Despite being rooted in the uptight Edwardian social rectitude of 1908, the novel still has plenty to say about the present day. At the time Edward Morgan Forster was firmly cowering at the back of the closet and channelling his hidden homosexuality into a critique of his time. People behave as they think they should behave. They repress their wonderful true nature in order to conform to stereotypes and thereby diminish their own existence. ... Read More:

"Remains of the Day" will be regarded as one of the great film masterpieces of the Merchant-Ivory team, now tragically ended with the untimely death, earlier this year, of Ismail Merchant from cancer. Their films were the quintessential cinematic epics respectful of both the settings and characters adapted from both period and contemporary novels, blessed frequently with elegant scripts from their literary partner Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and of course superb acting from their casts. "Remains of the Day" excels in all of these categories, as a spellbinding, faithful adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel, with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson as the star-crossed would-be lovers and servants of the pacifist Nazi sympathizer Lord Darlington (James Fox). Along ... Read More:

I remember I saw this movie I was about 17. I'd read the book and fell in love. It tells a love story between two men and the way they have to carry it out despite society rules (with some changes it still happens nowadays...).

The general message would be "love conquers all" but is it really so? Are Maurice and Scudder able to live happily ever after? I doubt, and on the beginning of the XXth century it would be even worse.

Despite all, it's lovely to watch the same kind of story we're used to watching in movies that portray society in different times, but now speaking about love between men! Although James Ivory's work is beyond criticism, in my point a view, there were some scenes in the book (the one when they are in London, sitting naked ... Read More:

This is a film based on a book - something James Ivory the director has done in the past but to better effect than he does here.Visually the film is sumptuous to look at and if you are a fan of painting and fashion and the sights and sounds of Paris I would recommend it to you, but if you are a fan of films that have action or an interesting and intriguing storyline then Le Divorce is not likely to please you.
And I would point Merchant-Ivory fans towards any of their other productions.

DVD : The White Countess [2005]
The film is made with care and everything in it (camerawork, locations, acting etc)is of the quality usually associated with Merchant Ivory films. An American, blinded a few (?) years before, lives in 1930's Shanghai and gets to know a White Russian woman who, with her family, has fled Sovietism and the Soviet Union to exist from hand to mouth in that city, which was partly composed then of several foreign "concessions" (small cities: French, British etc) under direct foreign control. She lives halfway between honest employment and frank prostitution. Fiennes is good as the driven American who falls in love with the White Countess and sets up a bar of that name, only to see the city occupied brutally (though less brutally than the somewhat later Soviet occupations of, say, Berlin ... A magnificent medieval bowl, created from a single perfect crystal, has, despite its appearance, a flaw--a crack which reduces its value. Henry James, author of the novel on which this Ruth Prawer Jhabvala screenplay is based, uses the gilded bowl as a metaphor for love and marriage, focusing on two couples, whose overlapping relationships and marriages prove to be as fragile and damaged as the bowl. Produced by Merchant-Ivory and sumptuously filmed by Tony Pierce-Roberts on locations in Italy and England, the film brings the intensity of the psychological conflicts to life.

Italian Prince Amerigo (Jeremy Northam) is the impoverished owner of Palazzo Ugolini near Rome, unable to maintain the palace until, in 1903, he marries Maggie Verver (Kate Beckinsale), daughter of the first ... Read More:
