ove The Rim is a fairly simplistic sports film, masquerading as a serious critique of the depressing nature of young black life in America. This simplistic nature is painfully evident in the clichéd and predictable plot and the characterisations, with the overstated villains in particular (who always seem to wear black - subtle!) appearing very shallow and cartoonish. When an attempt is made to flesh out the backstory of one of the characters (Shep) however, it comes across as very repetitive and most of these scenes (not helped by the wooden acting from 'Leon') fall flat and damage the pacing of the film.
