this is the best adaptation of one of Dickens' classics that I have ever seen. I saw it once on t.v. in the United States and have never been able to find it since then. When a production can grab & keep your interest while losing nothing, it is quite a feat. I just wish something like this was around when I had to read David Copperfield!

This is truly classic light drama covering Reilly's career form the Russo-Japanese war to the rise of Stalin. The Reilly character is very charming (as are his numerous paramours) but treacherous and the story told in a compelling and serialised way. If you like good acting, realistic sets, and a good story free from all the agitating diversions in contemporary television programmes then this is for you. It would not be made today as producers feel compelled to dumb down content with infantile background `mood' noises that grind on the nerves. I suspect this is to distract from the lack of content, or perhaps most programmes these days are made for children rather than those with adult tastes. Even though it was made in the 1980s, it is not really dated ... Read More:

The series is about a (somewhat stereotyped) patriarchal London family with the brothers forming the focus of the story. This series is a fantastic relief from the contemporary programmes which would have screaming noises as a background. Whilst there is some musical effects, the series relies on good acting from a number of now familiar actors and actresses as well as a good story line. If you want relaxed viewing with action but without the ludicrous and excessive effects of today's light dramas, get this and drift back to the 1980s.
Good stuff.

Hitler's S.S. was a 1985 film staring John Shea, Bill Nighy and Tony Randall. The film also stars British actors David Warner and John Woodnutt, among others.

Helmut and Karl Hoffman are two brothers who grow up in the depression of the Weimar Republic and witness the coming to power of the Nazi Party and the establishment of the Third Reich. Karl is enthusiastic about the Nazis and joins the SA as soon as he can, Helmut is reluctant and thinks the Nazis are simply another political party.

Helmut, who is a university student in Munich is eventually talked into joining the SS by Reinhard Heydrich. Helmut is commissioned an SS officer right before Hitler comes to power, whereas Karl has already been an SA member for a good year before. ... Read More:

Frank Ross wants to know who and why he was grassed up; a simple and well worn premise which obscures the depth and quality of Euston Films' first post Sweeney crime drama. Tom Bell's steely portrayal of an obviously highly intelligent South London gangster manages to be menacing and sympathetic. He has a lot on his conscious after his miserable criminal lifestyle drove his wife into an institution and his son into care.

His old partners in crime have had enough and have mostly moved on. The performances don't veer into stereotypes and while deliberately staying clear of the Sweeney's chases and shoot outs, the narrative makes this drama just as exciting. Ross says virtually nothing for the first 15 minutes of episode one but thanks to Bell's outstanding ... Read More:

The DVD box set offers excellent value for money and Martin Sheen and John Shea are very powerful as the Kennedy Brothers. History is repeated with accuracy although my only critisism is that their golden era is portrayed as just that "golden" although it clearly wasnt. I would still recommend this set to anyone for a rainy Sunday afternoon in.

After the advent of the series one box set I anxiously waited for the follow up, and the wait has not been at all dissapointing, and well worth it.
The digital remastering of these classic episodes is superb, and allows us to see and hear the best of 1970's action with 21st century technology.
The stars (many of whom we still recognise) putting in guest appearances are as ever superb, and the episode introductions by some of them give us an informed insight into the backstage goings on as well as story line embelishments.
For those of us who remember The Sweeney from the first time these box sets are real gems to savour alone or indeed to share socially with friends of a certain age. For classic car fans such as myself, every outdoor scene is a trip down ... Read More:
