John Boorman's 1981 film is an exercise in how to treat fantasy in an adult and serious manner.
The fantasy elements are subtle - there are no stop motion monsters to be found here - and yet still pervade the movie with a sense of the magical & arcane. This film in no way attempts a realistic approach to the extent of 2004's King Arthur.
Merlin as portrayed here is dark & ambiguous, constantly aware of the end of the time of magic & the old gods. A very eccentic performance by the
excellent Nicol Williamson. Helen Mirren as the evil & seductive sorceress, Morgana gives an erotically charged performance that is not easily forgotten!
Nigel Terry as Arthur is a bit wooden BUT his tone & manner suits the ... Read More:

Wow. Where do you start with a movie as good as this? The cast are perfect (they've all been in so many movies since, it's hard to believe most of them were unknowns at the time). Burt Reynolds was never better than he is in this movie. If you only know him for his good-ole-boy comedies, you'll be surprised at how good he is here in a serious dramatic role (without his trademark moustache!). He wouldn't get anything approaching the quality of this role until "Boogie Nights."

This film is not just full of memorable moments, they burn themselves into your brain and stay there forever. The deformed, in-bred hillbillies at the start, the "Duelling Banjos" scene with that withered kid, the awful, protracted male rape and the bloody ... Read More:

I first saw this film on TV about 10 years ago, recorded it at the time and watched it several times over. Having got rid of all my videos I realised that I had it no more!! Very, very pleased to find it, and at a bargain price as well. I would recomend this film to anyone who enjoys watching films on a Sunday afternoon infront of the fire. Excellent script, acting and sets. More than worth the fiver.

Martin Cahill was a real person. He didn't drink or smoke, had a loving if unconventional family life with his wife, her sister and their kids, didn't womanize. He also was clever, funny, charismatic, ruthless, and, up until the end, a successful Dublin criminal. He didn't see his crimes as vice, just as an occupation. In addition to hundreds of burglaries and thefts beginning when he was scarcely a teen, he was smart enough to pull off two immense robberies, the first involving a large number of gold bars and jewels, the other of extremely valuable paintings. He wound up on the bad side of the cops, of the IRA, of the Unionists and even of one of his gang members.

John Boorman has written and directed a fascinating life of Martin Cahill, ... Read More:

Saw this on TV about 25 years ago, and liked it then, although didn't quite realise at that time how sophisticated it was. Some things aren't as good as you remember them to be, and other things are better - this is definitely in the latter category.

Catch Us If You Can was filmed in the Winter of 1964, and released in 1965. It is sandwiched in between the Beatles two classics, and this film begins very much in the style of A Hard Day's Night - quick editing, fast one liners, the boys leading a zany lifestyle, all living together in a cool pad - bit like the Monkees template. But it soon settles into something far more substantial in terms of the themes it deals with - the cynical manipulation of advertising, dreams versus reality, finding meaning ... Read More:

This movie really wasn't great and I didn't really enjoy it as a movie. I really don't know what gave it it's fame today as a terrifying movie, because it's desperate attempts at being scary are laughable. People must have been scared a lot easier in the early 70s. I found this movie quite boring aswell, that was its problem, unlike most horror movies, it completely failed to grasp me.

A girl becomes posessed by the devil and her parents have become terrified of how obnoxious and truely hidious she has become so they call in two priests to perform an exorcism on her, but it doesn't seem to be having much of an effect on her.

The one good thing I can say about this movie is that it has great creepy music but I really don't feel that that is enough ... Read More:

I wasn't expecting much of this film, but in my opinion I thought it was really well-put together. There is excellent scenery and a decent plot about four friends who go camping along the river, and get attacked along the way. Enjoyable to watch and a superb ending. I would buy this film as you grow to like it and it doesn't get tedious. This is a film with twists and sometimes has suspense. It surprised me, I really took a liking to this film. A thriller to be enjoyed.

When his buddy, Mal Reese, with his wife, Lynne, looking on, puts two bullets into Walker right after they've high-jacked a big haul on Alcatraz island, Walker gets mad...and then gets even. Walker somehow survives those gunshots and a year later he returns. For the next hour and a half, Walker (Lee Marvin) is going to say once if he says it ten times, "I want my money back." The Organization is not about to accommodate Walker, even if Walker's money is only a measly $93,000. That includes Reese, who now has Walker's wife and who has become one of the Organization's top men, all of whom look like business CEOs. While Walker relentlessly goes after his money and works his way up the corporate criminal ladder, he leaves a trail of corpses behind. Walker is shrewd, violent and deadpan, and he won't ... In brief 'Zardoz' is a film about a group of immortals who, bored with life, use their advanced intelligence to convince people living outside their fortress that they are Gods, and make them kill each other (apparently to stop there being too many people, but it doesn't explain why that might be a problem). The group is infiltrated by a 'normal' person who destoys the machine that made them immortal, thus giving them the 'gift of death'.

'Zardoz' is a bit of a confused mess. It suffers from a lot of things, one of them notably is that it has too many little ideas in it that should progress the story, but because they haven't been developed or explained properly they often don't make sense. This is something that Boorman admits to in the commentary.
In fact, he also admits the opening ... Read More:
