Tense and fast paced from the start, with superb cinematography, and strong performances, this is not what you expect from a 1947 British film. What you expect is plummy accents and melodramatic performances - and you get some of that from the Ida Arnold character - but the central performances from Richard Attenborough, Carol Marsh and William Hartnell are superb. The film is every bit as good as "The Third Man" with Attenborough probably outclassing Orson Welles. A classic and as good as any British thriller I've seen.

Would be on most people's top 50 British films ever made list. It is way up there on entertainment value, and as a critique of 1950s life at work it is as good as a documentary. Very astute, very cleverly plotted, magnificently played, this is a film that seems to get even better with age, possibly because most of the practices satirised here are nostalgic memories now, however damaging they were. It takes you back to a day when jobs seemed safe for life, and even being sacked for incompetence was fairly rare if you belonged to one of the big unions. That the unions remained really powerful for another twenty years after this very critical film was made shows just how strong they were - Oh how things have changed! To be fair, this film attacks both sides, ... Read More:

I sat down with great anticipation to watch this film. I was hoping for a 'Brideshead Revisited' experience, but it was more like 'Please Sir!' Lucky Jim is one of my all-time favourite books - and my kids' too. The film does not do justice to the book in any way; perhaps the time is right for someone to attempt a proper dramatisation of the book, with its subtle portrayal of character, its dry humour, its incomparable wit. Don't get me wrong, this film is funny; it has several genuine belly laughs, which is more than you get at the cinema these days, but it's mostly a slapstick, broad humour that is more Carry-On than the intellectual gymnastics of the original work . Ian Carmichael is surprisingly attractive in this film (he reminded me of Mike Myers!) -but ... Read More:

This is one of the must see British sci-fi films of the post war era, with more suspense than sci-fi. The acting performances in the cameo roles include a superb "Goldie" by Olive Sloan, as a good-time girl who has slightly gone to seed (but still has a definite allure) and Joan Hickson as the appalling landlady "Mrs. Peckett" juggling a fag and whose grubby rooms you know just have to smell of cat. The views of a vanished London and it's inhabitants are priceless. Imagine a tube ticket for a penny halfpenny! The idea of the suitcase sized fission weapon still haunts us today although the enemies have changed, and all shot in black & white with wonderful contrast and atmosphere. So much for the film. The quality of the print as the other review implies is poor. A load ... Read More:

There are things to enjoy in this film - principally Peter Sellers performance - but I think the film is undermined by a too implausible script, that becomes glaring at the films end. I think its worth seeing because Sellers is great - and there is real sadness when we see the state he gets into, in this wicked world - but I dont understand the five stars lavished on it by other reviewers. And I dont think its a Liverpool accent - sounds more like a Midlands accent to me!

I was very pleased when I heard they had finally got around to releasing this classic movie. Unfortunately, Studio Canal have chosen to give us no extras whatsoever - not even subtitles!! This film was made for the Festival of Britain in 1951 and was a major movie at the time, so there must be loads of footage out there. No excuses, this is a big disappointment. The picture quality is fair, but the colour balance is pretty dreadful and it all looks slightly blurred. As for the sound, its the old mono soundtrack and it doesn't sound as if it's been remastered particularly well, if at all. I tend to think this may have been taken from a tape master as it really doesn't look a whole lot different from my VHS copy. Pity!

Many people think of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther films. Forget them, the earlier the film, the better his acting.

DVD : Private's Progress [1956]
Stanley Windrush (Ian Carmichael) is called up during WW2 and sent for training under the permanently exasperated Sergeant played by William Hartnell. Failing officer training he is sent to a holding camp presided over by Terry-Thomas, with his perpetual cry of "You're a shower, an absolute shower". Here he encounters the crafty Private Cox (Richard Attenborough) who explains to him how it is possible to avoid active service more or less indefinitely, only, as he explains "the trouble is you're educated, and that sort of limits, you, doesn't it?". Cox and his mates are up to all sorts of nefarious activities, and Windrush finds himself in all kinds of trouble. Meanwhile his dodgy Uncle Bertie (Dennis Price) is up to some shady dealings in art.

Finally Windrush's luck runs out and he is sent ... Read More:
