After watching this DVD I believe the comment rating it with only two stars on grounds of the poor video quality is not fair. Image and sound might not be the best possible ones - this is not a digital remastered picture -but they are fairly good.
On the other hand, it is an excellent feature with great actors.

What a fantastic print we now have of this film since the original cinerama has now been restored and the three joins of the original can no longer be seen. Finally the film can be seen in glorious depth and colour with both images in the foreground and background in crystal clarity.

A fantastic commentary is also added by filmmaker David Strohmaier, Director of Cinerama, Inc. John Sitting, Film Historian Rudy Behlemer, Music Historian Jon Burlingame and Stuntman Loren James which throws so much new light on the making of the movie.

For those who have never seen the film; sit back and enjoy.

For those who have seen the film many times on TV or video, and longed for the day.....welcome for the first time to ... Read More:

suffering defines the human spirit of survival-true-and here
steinbeck was giving a simple message -survival is for the fittest in any civilization whether democratic or fascist, here the oklahoma dustbowl is the land of dispossessed and their suffering is the message to the fulfillment of their broken dreams ,poverty can be a curse and it is restrictwed not only to africa but white american kids dying of kwashiorkor secondary to malnutrition.

ford gets the steinbeck message across with simplicity and the materialism is not crticised just observed as a reality while the people are evicted from ancestral homes and they die and starve on route 66.

the movie is sentimental ,emotional and intelligent all at the same time ... Read More:

It is hard to review a film that has been examined by critics in such detail over the years. Film is a very personal thing and it is for this reason I feel I should record my thoughts. My very first memories of film were of watching "The Searchers" as a small child many years ago. In particular I recall seeing John Wayne lifting a very young Natalie Wood up in that great purging of the dark side scene at the end of the film. I was mesmerised by the scenery and the great screen prescence of John Wayne, who strode the film like a colossus. A very dark colossus it has to be said. Does it still stand up under scrutiny after all these years. The answer is a resounding yes although I can see the small flaws now which through rose tinted spectacles I missed in the past. ... This is the first film which uses the US Cavalry as the background/set (as much as Monumental Valley) for telling us a typical John Ford story, there are the values of decency and common sense and the very important sense of humor in one side and bigotry and stupidity in the other... and that on the same side (meaning life in the regiment which is a metaphor of a rigid society)... confronted against the Indians who as usual in early Ford films just plays the danger OUTSIDE...
Filmed in black&white in the exceptional way of the master it has passed with honors the terrible true test of time and has become a classic.
The script is what you can expect, but mainly is a confrontation between the martinet colonel (from the East) played convincingly by Henry Fonda ... Read More:

This is not going to be a diatribe against the puzzling nominations and awards of the academy...
Just let me say John Wayne and John Ford deserved it many times over.
Once this out of my chest... the second (of the "Cavalry Trilogy" and the only one in color) film dedicated to the US cavalry (which in fact is a recurrent theme of the director... see my review of "Fort Apache")...
This time the main (and secondary played by Victor McLaglen) characters are both waiting for retirement for the Army... and have to do a last patrol... from there on... duty, decency and common sense take care of the script. In parallel runs a love affair between the first lieutenant and the commandant niece which is also pretended by the second lieutenant... son of a general and ... Read More:

'How the West was Won' was the forerunner of widescreen cinema and was originally shot as a cinerama (curved screen) movie. Warner have made an excellent job of creating a widescreen letterbox transfer (without the three-panel vertical line joins) of this classic western from 1963 which features a myriad of screen giants such as Gregory Peck, Carrol Baker, James Stewart, Lee J Cobb, Karl Malden, John Wayne, George Peppard, Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark and Debbie Reynolds, amongst others. Like the more recent 'Deadwood', this movie was the work of more than one director (Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall in this case) and is essentially split into three historical periods whilst also following the fate of one particular family from beginning to end.

The cinematography ... Read More:
