This film left me with the distinct feeling of having been ripped-off. A poster featuring some very purposeful-looking criminal types, a European setting, a famous director - there initially appeared to be much on offer. The reality, however, was quite different. In this mindless mess of a movie, Robert De Niro reprises his stock `90s role of gun-toting anti-hero and, in the company of a ragbag of international B-listers, takes a trip into the heart, not of darkness, but of dullness. The basic story is, well, pretty basic. The film consists mostly of a series of ridiculous stand-offs and arguments between De Niro and the other players, who comprise a gang engaged in some kind of convoluted theft. Oh, and there are couple of car-chases - wow! ... Read More:

Ronin is, in my opinion, is John Frankenheimer's best film - even picked up a few awards along the way. Robert De Nero's take on Sam is excellent, and even Sean Bean does well in this, as the crazy gun toting Spence. The star of the movie has to be Natascha McElhone as Deirdre; desperate to get that case no matter what. Was really pleased to see Jean Reno in this, his French flair being a centrepiece.

If you don't know what Ronin is about then prepare for a whirlwind plot, dodgy plans and wasted opportunities (by the gang, not direction), oh and probably the best car chases I've seen in the 90s. The best one being in Paris, closely followed by the one in Nice.

The film has a lot of twists and turns, and is a pleasure ... Read More:

I remember watching this film when I was a kid with my motorsport addicted grandfather and didn't fully appreciate the story, cast and locations but loved the action.

I purchased the 2 disc Special Edition recently and Ive watched twice since and loved it even more now that film quality has been hugely improved on visual colour and sound quality.

I can now appreciate the film more with age, the director Zimmermann, who also directed Ronin (note the car chases), James Garner (I loved The Rockford Files), Tishiro Mifune (Im a big Akira Kurosawa fan)and now the fact that I know the circuits and locations in the film, the cars and the histories of the REAL individual F1 drivers. Graham Hill, James Hill, Jack Brabham, Phil Hill ... Read More:

the movie is well crafted and staged ,it is a fictional account and it raises some intersting questions about viability of art and value of human life.

the german colonel wants a trainload of stolen modern french art transported to berlin as the allies advance to paris ,he chooses only french painters like cezanne, renoir, picasso, lautrec, manet, van gogh ,matisse ,dufy ,braque and others for reasons known to himself alone ,his excuse to authorities is it is worth billions ,but he is secretly an art lover who worships these as a connoisseur.

london gives french resistaance orders to save the train and stop the art installment from being taken to germany .

the fact that most art stolen or destroyed in WW2 was from germany ... Read More:

Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider in early 70's New York City. Dirty, dangerous and gritty NYC. They are narcotic cops after the drug lords who import heroin into NYC via France. The methods and language used by these cops is far from PC but they get the job done!

Oh and it includes one of THE great car chase sequences. What's great about the car chase is that it's just long enough - not a second is wasted.

Much of this film set the way for other such crime films/TV shows and pretty much the standard for car chases in films.

A strong 7/10.

This is a must-see for anybody even slightly interested in drama, acting and writing. A to-kill-for cast that includes career busting performances from the entire company but especially LEE MARVIN and ROBERT RYAN. Ryan in particular is a revelation. For those of us who only know him for FILM NOIR and WESTERN roles we here get a glimpse at this man's stage presence. I would love to have seen him live on stage. My only problem with this DVD is that it is a dreadful transfer. Top right of the screen flickers throughout the viewing and the colour shifts. SHAME. If you can live with these faults then you are in for a treat. Such a wonderful piece of work deserves a full-on clean up. inD (company).....get your act together!
