It's no doubt a great box set, and with an appealing price it's hard to resist BUT the Region 1 box set has 2 extra films. Pocket Money and The Young Philadelphians is the reason I went with the Region 1 (USA and Canada) box set.

Hardly seems fair now does it.

Fantastic movie even a good 50 plus years after its original release. The first few minutes weren't the best and I was worried Katherine Hepburn was going to let me down for the first time. The lines just seemed too cheesy and the acting forced to the point of being comical. Like I said, it was only for the first few minutes. Once it becomes all about Hepburn and Bogart I was blown away. Two characters for pretty much the whole film and that was more than enough with the witty, charming dialog of the good classics. Bogart really steals the show and it isn't hard to see why he was awarded the oscar for best actor.
Essentially it's a tried and tested formula. Boy meets girl and they take instant dislike to each other but over time warm to each other ... Read More:

I wouldn't normally write reviews as it's all so subjective. However, this was so bad I feel compelled to tell you. I wanted to turn it off after 30 minutes but persevered. It's awful.

Fun, intriguing, a bit eerie, and a little bit silly, "The List of Adrian Messenger" was, in 1963, a bit of a throwback to 1940s-style British mysteries, with some added promotional gimmickry prevalent in late-'50s and early-'60s pop cinema.

I first saw this film on TV as a child and was fascinated (and a little creeped out) by the disguises -- particularly by the removal of a false eye early in the film. (Sorry for the spoiler.) Being a young movie fan I was familiar with all the Hollywood "guest stars" purported to be littered throughout the film in disguise, and had fun trying to spot them (I say "purported," since their presence is disputed -- read on).

Another look at "Adrian Messenger" with a bit more mature eye confirms it to be an enjoyable ... Read More:

As the story opens, Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) has just arrived in Reno to get a quickie divorce. She meets Guido (Eli Wallach), a sensitive mechanic and his pal Gay (Clark Gable), an aging cowboy. Both men fall in love with the beautiful, child-like blonde, and she ends up living with Gay in Guido's house. The men take Roslyn out the desert to go "mustangin'," but she's horrified when she learns the purpose of their trip.

This story is about four aimless and rather pathetic people who have nothing to do and no place to do it in. They're just drifting through life and for a short time, they drift together. Gable is outstanding as the rugged old cowpoke who still wants a woman's touch. He takes manly command of every scene and is charisma personified. Wallach's role ... Read More:

Certainly one of the greatest and most beautiful films ever made, and this is also one of the most outstanding films of modern movie making - and quite remarkable in that it was made as recent as 1987!

This gem opens like a Christmas Card, and has the appearance and style of a movie that could have been made many years ago! I remember seeing this for the first time when the only way to get to see a new movie was to rent it from a Video Store (before you could buy them) My mother and I had selected this title - not knowing why. We watched it together and you could hear a pin drop! I couldn't wait to purchase it when it came on general release!

So many of the cast is outstanding that it is difficult to name who is the best here (the poignancy ... Read More:

A wonderfully realised cine-tale of Herman Melville's timeless book of revenge and ambition. On the surface this is a marvellous tale of adventure upon the high seas. An insight into the 19th-century trade of whaling in which the dangerous hunt, if successful, may not only satisfy the need for exhilaration, where untested men and boys would arrive home fully grown through their adventures, but also where a high price may be had for the precious whale oil acquired from their victims.

There is, however, another side to this tale. The book Moby-Dick (or Moby Dick) warns of the price of obsession and the single-mindedness of pursuing a goal whose only purpose is to recklessly face and destroy the monster within at all costs. The story is deeply symbolic with intense Jungian ... Read More:

Whilst watching this film a giant frog put his eye up to the window and tried to look at me, I can only assume this has something to do with the film and I will not be watching it again.
