When I first saw this film on release in 1978, many of the critics had panned it with several observing that it was only interesting when in the water, given surfing is its main excitement and the movie subsequently bombed. Looked at again 30 years later (I have in fact seen it several times in between given the cult status it enjoys in UK fringe cinemas), the film's time horizon of mid 1960s to early 1970s following a surfing mad group growing up is nowhere as bad as those critics may have indicated.

Named after the fact that most big surfing swells over the years have occurred on Wednesday, the film by using the surfing culture provides an excellent snapshot of a group of Californian teenagers maturing across the late 1960s and ... Read More:

I cant reccommend Red Dawn enough.Easily the most laughable film ever made.Shocking propaganda and hilariously cheesey and wooden performances from all invovled.Frighting that it was ever supposed to be taken seriously.Patricks "tormented" Lawerance of Arabia leader type character is worth the asking price alone. The film is constant throughout with each scene just as absurd and humourous as the preceeding one.A true classic, fun for all the family.10/10

Years after the brutal murder of his parents, Conan the Barbarian sets out on a perilous quest for vengeance on the evil Thulsa Doom. With his trusted companions, he has a series of marvelous adventures which culminate in the fulfillment of his long hoped for goal. A vigorous and bloody sword-and-sorcery epic featuring Schwarzenegger's breakthrough role.

The amazing electrifying choral music of Basil Poledouris goes a long way in trying to convey the adventures and excitement of battles and conquests of the prehistoric age.

In playing Conan, Arnold was fresh off his first documentary movie, where he won the Mr. Olympic title, so he was particularly pumped. All the cast members were fairly new to film, and it also had a fairly ... Read More:

John Milius with an aircraft carrier to play with - he must have thought he'd died and gone to Valhalla, or at least until Flight of the Intruder got trapped in release date hell and proved his last theatrical release to date. Originally scheduled for Summer 1990, but put back to avoid a clash with Air America, its Autumn release was then postponed so that Paramount could use it as a standby for the cinemas that had booked Godfather III just in case Coppola didn't finish editing in time. He did. Then, to cap it all, three days after finally opening in the States in a re-edited version, the first Gulf War started, rendering it almost unpromotable because of his gung ho reputation.

Yet in actuality, hawkish sentiments confined to a great one-line ... Read More:

Before Arnie became The Terminator he was Conan the Barbarian in this visually stunning fantasy film based on the books of Robert E. Howard. An endlessly influential film, withe recent films such as the Matrix and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy taking elements from it, a film with much greater depth than most give it credit for, clever, emotive, with a smart script, one of the best soundtracks of all time, strong performances and great action. Conan the Barbarian is an underrated classic, but one which all Arnie fans love, one which deserves to be recognised for what it is rather than criticising it as brainless violence.

DVD : Dillinger [1973] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
First time director John Milius exploded into the movie business with this classic gangster movie. Following the success of BONNIE& CLYDE Hollywood had a brief romance with depression era crime sagas, and this is one of the best. Warren Oates is perfectly cast as the famous bandit, He actually looks like Dillinger. With Ben Johnson as his nemisis G man Melvin Purvis. The Film has pace romance and brilliant action sequences. This is defientally worth buying.

Conan The Barbarian is probably my fave film. Since 2002, this film has been released on DVD 4 times, 2 of which were Special Editions, and now this Definitive Edition. All my life I had been waiting for a uncut version, but once again its the same old, same old - I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was on about concerning some cuts 'restored' but the fact is that like the previous DVD releases, some of the 'horse fall' scenes have been cut, mostly in the final battle sequence. Its particularly poxy because, like before, if you watch the Conan Unchained documentary on Disc 2, you will see one of the cut scenes shown ! (its the scene where Conan, and Rexor on a horse, charge each other, and Conan cuts at the legs of the horse - in the film, the actual fall sequence of the ... Read More:

DVD : The Wind and the Lion [1975] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
For me, The Wind and the Lion is one of the great adventure films of all time (rather than an action movie per se) and certainly has the best script of the 70s, managing to combine adventure, myth, romance, wit and political cynicism while creating memorable characters and driving the story forward. Its influences are clearly noticeable, and all acknowledged by writer-director John Milius: the children's behavior is straight out of A High Wind in Jamaica, the superb beach sequence inspired by another horseback swordfight in The Hidden Fortress (Kurosawa is a big Milius influence elsewhere in the film as well) while the finale throws in a tip of the hat, both musically and visually, to The Wild Bunch. But unlike a Tarantino grab-bag of favorite movie moments, Milius manages to ... Read More:
