War movies don't usually appeal to me but "Yanks" is truely a great film and it dosn't surprise me one bit that it was a box office hit back in 1979. It's a beautiful story with a great cast, both moving and funny at times and it even has a cameo from Lynne Perrie.
So, even if you're not a fan of war movies, "Yanks" is still a classic piece of work which you have just got to see because I for one was pleasantly surprised when I purchased it.
Highly Recommended!

Sad to hear that this one is still the same old shocking transfer of a really great and beautifully (Nic Roeg) filmed movie. To use the title of another Julie Christie/Nic Roeg work "Don't Look Now".
Why?
I have a notification from Amazon.com (US) that there is a NEW release due on January 27th 2009 (search it out). If there's any justice in filmdom - THAT one will be the remastered version we've all been longing and waiting for. Thanks to the previous two reviewers!!! And thanks Amazon UK for not automatically appending 57 previous unrelated reviews (of VHS tapes et al) to this release.

Just have to balance these other reviews, because I bought this to add to my collection and was very disappointed. Nothing at all special here.

Watched this a teenager back in the '80's.
British television drama at its best.
This is a quirky, funny production, filled with wonderful acting by a plethora of British stars, headed by a young Kate Beckinsale. Timeless.
If you like off-beat comedy drama, rent this.

This is without doubt the greatest film ever filmed in Yorkshire - Bradford and a bit of Leeds ( and a short scene in Oxford Street). It has no faults, so rare for any film.

This was the film that made Julie Christie into a star, however she was not the first choice. The first Liz was played by Topsy Jane who became ill during the shoot and had to be replaced. Julie Christie was chosen because she was the first person they asked who was free to go to Bradford that week.

Not only did I see this film for the first time just a couple of weeks ago, but I was fortunate enough to know hardly anything about it, other than the two lead actors and the fact that it always seem to appear on any 'films to see before you die' lists.

Shame on me - this is a fantastic film, unsettling, deeply sad, with two amazing central performances from Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman.

I'm not sure whether I could ever watch it again, as it was emotionally draining, and that's the only reason why I haven't given it 5 stars.

However, this is one of the most moving and powerful films I have ever seen and two weeks on, I feel compelled to put electronic pen to paper.

It genuinely is a film to see before ... Read More:

This film may be set in swinging London, but it's a world away from the good natured celebrations of coolness and fabness that films whose action was centred on Carnaby Street tended to be. In Schlesinger's London, marriage to your first love - however settled and however many kds you have - will inevitably end in divorce when you meet someone younger and better dressed. You may be a Nobel winning novelist - but you will still give away your most valued possessions in return from some flattery from a pretty girl. Decency is old fashoned and loyalty - even to your closest friends - isn't worth giving up a 'liaison' for. Even when the object of your attention is your (male) best friend's new boyfriend. The - startlingly contemporary feeling - amorality of ... Read More:

The undisputable classic out of the very good 1970s batch of political intrigue and Nazi hunter movies. The cast is superb, the actors are on top form, the screenplay is taut and exciting and the scenes are memorable. Hoffman is perfect for his role and Olivier is at his eye rolling best for this classical acting meets method acting masterclass. It spawned one of the greatest actorly quotes in cinema history from the great classical actor, and you can't fail to see a bit of professional competetion between the two stars when watching them perform against each other here. It would be a gem for this alone, but as a movie it shines out above all the others in an engrossing genre for having that little bit extra in entertainment value and cinematic flair.
