"Face Off" is that rarest of films, an intelligent and soulful action movie which is both excellent and bad in equal measure.

In fact, as far as I can remember, only "The Last Boy Scout" starring Bruce Willis was comparable; an exploration of the characters' humanity which was almost ruined by the usual clichés.

Aside from the slow-motion gun battle in which the young boy is listening to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," almost all of the `Action' in this film is gratuitous rubbish. The metaphors are so blatant that they might as well be highlighted in neon. Even the plot itself is wildly implausible and full of gaping chasms. So in the end, the one thing that earned this film four stars was Nicolas Cage's incredible ... Read More:

I picked this DVD up dirt cheap and was pleasantly surprised. American WW11 films not normally my cup of tea but this is action packed and well acted without too much swearing. Worth watching.

This actually contains the 2 disc version of 'Bullet in the Head', making it a 4 disc set. All of the extras on that bonus disc are listed on the back of the box, so I believe the '3 Disc Collector's Edition' note on the front is just plain wrong.

As far as I know, these are the best region 2 editions of these movies currently available.

The film is very poor, easily the weakest in the series. It has a plot so thin it's translucent and rather than being seen as a film, it should be regarded as a rather meaningless sequence of quite ridiculous set-pieces and special effects. Dougray Scott proves here in this film once again that he quite simply cannot act, he merely leanrs words and delivers them and even Tom Cruise just doesn't seem interested. On the strength of this,if you're planning to make a ridiculous martial arts flick where story and performances just don't matter then John Woo is the director for you, otherwise please don't let this man near a film camera again!

Sci-fi actioner directed by John Woo in which square-jawed Ben Affleck pays Michael Jennings, a gifted computer engineer who takes on secretive computer projects for corporations for large sums of cash with one catch: the corporations insist that after completing each assignment he must have his short-term memory wiped so that he remembers nothing of the work that he has done. Each assignment thus far has been short-term, lasting no more than eight weeks, so each time Jennings has had his memory wiped after completing an assignment he has lost no more than eight weeks of his life. But this time he has been offered an assignment by a company called Allcom for which he will be paid $92 million on its completion, enough to set him up for life. The problem? ... Read More:

Good film - but you need to buy the US release to avoid the censorship cuts. US version is unfortunately region coded. What is the point of region coding older films apart from being able to charge more in the UK? In fact what is the point of region coding period. It can only encourage piracy.

An OK Woo heroic bloodshed movie from the mid 80s. It's very dated though. However, how on earth can the DVD be called 'Ultimate'. The print of the movie is an old European copy - it's very soft in places and some scenes just look horrible on the eyes. If you're used to the superb 'Hong Kong Legends' titles this isn't a patch on them. Extra's wise it falls down too. There's a ood Bey Logan commentary on disc one, disc two includes a John Woo documentary - not one specific to 'A Better Tomorrow' - it's not that good either spending a lot of time on Woo's Hollywood career. And there's a couple interviews. Not so much Ulimate as the 'That'll do for now' edition. However, the movies enjoyable enough and we're unlikely to see a better copy in the near future. There's ... If the word "contrived" hadn't previously existed, it would have been invented for this film! It's as predictable as it's possible to get with so many glaring errors in the "plot" (and I use the word loosely!) that it could quite easily be classed as a comedy. The story gets dragged out time and time again by creating ridiculous situations, just to keep things going, and by the end I was actually hoping the bomb would go off and get rid of the entire cast.

I wasn't expecting a Hitchcock style thriller, but when the writers have to resort to making the baddies so dumb, that even a completely dumb "goody" can defeat them, you can't help but bang your head against the wall in frustration!

Grab a bowl of popcorn, pull up your favourite armchair ... Read More:

I have never written a review before but this is genius. Van Damme punches a rattlesnake in the face and then bites off its rattle in order for the snake to then be used in a silent ambush against his assailants. Quite simply the best bit of movie I have ever seen. Legend.
