A fantastic story brought to life by great acting and no shying away from the politics of the day. Some very funny moments and some that bring a lump to your throat. Well worth a watch - several in fact!

Even though I feel Robert Redford is getting a bit old to play the romantic hero, I did enjoy this movie. I liked the newsroom setting. I felt Michelle Pfeiffer gave a very good performance and that she and Mr. Redford had a very likeable chemistry. I didn't care for the ending, but it was good viewing on the whole. A good love story.

No matter how many times I watch this film, the charm of it's excessive sentimentality never fails to draw me in. This film is engaging and warm-hearted, bringing us into the life of Evelyn, a gentle and good-natured Southern woman who is going through the menopause, played by Kathy Bates. After going with her husband to a local retirement home to visit one of his relatives, Evelyn meets and befriends an elderly woman named Mrs. Threadgoode, played by Jessica Tandy.

The way in which the film seamlessly flits between past and present is admirable. After befriending each other, the two woman share the details of their lives, and Evelyn learns of the stories of Mrs. Threadgoode's various family members, from long ago, in a tiny little ... Read More:

This is a poignant film about today's world and how change can come to a country, any country. In this case we are dealing with China. Corrupted people are framing up an American TV man in order to prevent a contract being signed that does not go in the right direction for their interests. The point is that the corrupted and plotting official is the son of a highly respected man, a son who was educated in the West and brought back his corruption, or at least a good knowledge and know how about it, from his foreign sojourn. He is using the opaque situation in changing China to cover up his dealings and has a little group of plotters and accomplices to manage his operations. But the film tries to show how the Chinese today are realizing from their ... Read More:

Usually I loathe very brief reviews, but this film doesn't deserve any better. It's impossible to overstate just how bad it is. Don't buy it, don't rent it, don't accept it if it's offered you for free.

DVD : The War [1996]
"The War," a film by director Jon Avnet, paints a beautiful picture of family life in rural Mississipi, shortly after the Vietnam war. Steven Simmons (Kevin Kostner) has returned from Vietnam and is suffering from post-traumatic stress. He cannot find work, his family has been evicted and their house destroyed. His children, Stu (Elijah Wood) and Lidia (Lexi Randall) have problems of their own. Seen through the eyes of 12-year-old Lidia, the film centres round a tree-house that the children build, a possession of theirs that they will defend against local children - at all costs. "This is our house," says Lidia. "Maybe the only one we are ever going to have. Don't you think we should fight for it?" Meanwhile their father tries to teach ... Read More:
